Fuel burn laps under fire

Pat Symonds, director of engineering at Renault, has revealed that Formula 1 teams are trying to remove the late fuel burn stage of qualifying.

Under current conditions, Formula 1 drivers spend the early part of the third 15 minute qualifying stint burning off fuel a strategy which has come under fire for not being particularly eco-friendly at a time when the sport is trying to become greener.

“I think we have to find a way around fuel burning laps, which is a completely strange thing to do given we are all becoming eco-friendly,” Bob Bell, technical director at Renault, explained.

“The so-called fuel burning is not good, and interestingly, we are talking about that tomorrow with a view to getting rid of it for 2008,” Symonds added.
