EU wants electric car championship

The EU is looking into an electric Formula 1 championship. According to various news reports, the European Union Commission has already contact Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, over the possibility of creating an electric car championship.

It is hoped that Formula One would be able to build awareness of the championship whilst also demonstrating that electric cars are just as capable of racing whilst being more environmentally friendly that their petrol-powered counterparts. It is believed that electric car racing could be seen as early as 2013.

“We want as soon as possible to have new categories with new energy,” FIA president Jean Todt told the Financial Times.

Whether electric car racing will take off remains to be seen. One of the key elements that draws most people to racing series is the sound of the cars – something which will probably be sorely lacking in an electric car race.
