Lauda: The wing is a “most stupid idea”

Former triple F1 champion Niki Lauda is not impressed with F1’s new adjustable rear wing feature.

“The wing is the most stupid idea,” he told Sport1. “Overtaking should be done by the drivers themselves and decided by them, not by the FIA with green lights in the cockpit telling them to fold their wings down or up. I would never have introduced this. It is certainly the most crazy idea ever invented.”

The 2011 season saw a new adjustable wing being introduced into the F1 championship and it has thus far drawn a mixed reaction. The Drag reduction System (DRS) is controlled not by the drivers or teams, but by the FIA stewards, who can only activate it when a driver is within a second of the car in front of them.
