If these rumors turn out to be true, then Honda getting to see how the Mercedes engines work for a year before having to run their engines in 2015 may be more than enough to compensate for being a year late to the party.

The worst seasons Mclaren have had were always when they were trying to integrate a new engine, so it is a big risk and no one needs that instability.
It will not be like Brawn swapping a Merc engine for a Honda one in 2009. At best it will a painless switch, but things could go horribly wrong for a year or so

Mclaren used to get their engines for free, they're paying for engines starting this year. It's Mclaren's option, and it's Mclaren exercising the option for 2014 and whether or not to extend that not Mercedes. That's why I'm suggesting Merc is overcharging McLaren and maybe Honda sell engines cheaper.
Only at that point will pricing be renegotiated.

The company has not yet officially confirmed its plans to return."
Would it really be a good idea to sign with a company which has now less than a year grace period to build a high performance, reliable engine for 2013?
