However this has been in the air for a while and Honda do not look ready for 2014, hopefully they will have a competitive engine for 2015 notwithstanding the other manufacturers year head start
Another engine manufacturer is always welcomed, but if that's the case then I think we'll be bidding adieu to Cosworth so overall it's a net sum. If these rumors turn out to be true, then Honda getting to see how the Mercedes engines work for a year before having to run their engines in 2015 may be more than enough to compensate for being a year late to the party.

I guess by the same token Merc taking Mclarens top driver and engineer should be enough to compensate having Honda take a close look at their engine for a year.
The worst seasons Mclaren have had were always when they were trying to integrate a new engine, so it is a big risk and no one needs that instability.
It will not be like Brawn swapping a Merc engine for a Honda one in 2009. At best it will a painless switch, but things could go horribly wrong for a year or so
Contracts were singed long ago and in this case go through 2013 with an option for 2014 and 2015. pricing is irrelevant as they were still very chummy even in 2010 when Mercedes came on board. Mclaren used to get their engines for free, they're paying for engines starting this year. It's Mclaren's option, and it's Mclaren exercising the option for 2014 and whether or not to extend that not Mercedes.
Only at that point will pricing be renegotiated.

Contracts are sometimes signed and sometimes singed - just depends on one's mood

Shocking, isn't it?
"Honda president Takanobu Ito on 8 February admitted that the company was "studying" the idea of an F1 return.
The company has not yet officially confirmed its plans to return."
Would it really be a good idea to sign with a company which has now less than a year grace period to build a high performance, reliable engine for 2013?
