PM sent, no need to continue that conversation in a McLaren thread.

However this has been in the air for a while and Honda do not look ready for 2014, hopefully they will have a competitive engine for 2015 notwithstanding the other manufacturers year head start

Another engine manufacturer is always welcomed, but if that's the case then I think we'll be bidding adieu to Cosworth so overall it's a net sum. If these rumors turn out to be true, then Honda getting to see how the Mercedes engines work for a year before having to run their engines in 2015 may be more than enough to compensate for being a year late to the party.

I guess by the same token Merc taking Mclarens top driver and engineer should be enough to compensate having Honda take a close look at their engine for a year.
The worst seasons Mclaren have had were always when they were trying to integrate a new engine, so it is a big risk and no one needs that instability.
It will not be like Brawn swapping a Merc engine for a Honda one in 2009. At best it will a painless switch, but things could go horribly wrong for a year or so

But I've always felt that Merc are pulling one over on McLaren, considering they'd love to beat them and they have a works team that's slowly taking all of McLaren's employees (Hate shield activate) so they may be over charging McLaren for their engines, compared to the smaller teams like FI (Pure speculation though) but it makes business and racing sense to overcharge your direct competitors.

Contracts were singed long ago and in this case go through 2013 with an option for 2014 and 2015. pricing is irrelevant as they were still very chummy even in 2010 when Mercedes came on board. Mclaren used to get their engines for free, they're paying for engines starting this year. It's Mclaren's option, and it's Mclaren exercising the option for 2014 and whether or not to extend that not Mercedes.

Only at that point will pricing be renegotiated.

That's why I'm suggesting Merc is overcharging McLaren and maybe Honda sell engines cheaper.

Contracts are sometimes signed and sometimes singed - just depends on one's mood :hehe:

"Honda president Takanobu Ito on 8 February admitted that the company was "studying" the idea of an F1 return.
The company has not yet officially confirmed its plans to return."

Would it really be a good idea to sign with a company which has now less than a year grace period to build a high performance, reliable engine for 2013?

Someone posted in the Silly Season thread that there are strong rumours about Honda already working at Woking. Honda will have been working away on somethng for a while if they are serious about returning as an engine supplier.

Think the story goes (well, the one i read earlier) that Honda wouldn't enter until 2015 if they came back.

2015 is what I read, too. Which would make some sense, particularly if they were going to have an exclusive deal to start with, as McLaren's contract with Mercedes isn't up until the end of 2014 anyway. I suppose that gives them a chance to gather as much information as they can from observing the different engines over the season (as much as one is able without direct access, anyway). The things that concern me are the fact that the previous Honda engines weren't the best, and the company's long-term commitment to the sport if they do come back.
