Congrats to Button for his 200th GP, I won't watch the race for a while yet so I won't comment but from looking at the F1 app, and getting some commentary from guys on the chat (that's guys) it looked like an exciting GP.

Looks like McLaren can threaten for the remainder of the year, and SPA is next! Can we see 3 back to back GPs with McLaren coming out on top?

Hamilton: Radio glitch caused Hungary strategy mistakes

Lewis Hamilton said radio communication issues led to his errant switch to intermediate tyres late in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was engaged in a spectacular battle for victory with his team-mate Jenson Button in the final part of the race when he opted to pit for intermediates amid a rain shower.

But the track dried almost immediately and he had to make an additional pitstop.

"We were having radio issues," Hamilton explained. "I could hear my engineers, but they couldn't hear me, so I was constantly asking for information but they couldn't hear me. So it was a very difficult call for them.

"I think there was perhaps one point when they got some information from me but maybe it was a little bit of info. I heard them say it was going to rain and it was already spitting, so we opted to go for the wet tyres. I think they called me in and I did the lap. Anyway the tyres went off and it wasn't necessarily the best call, but that's motor racing."

Even if he had not made the tyre decision, Hamilton's hopes of victory were set to be dashed by a penalty for forcing Paul di Resta's Force India off the road as the McLaren did a spin-turn to rejoin after an error at the chicane.

"I made a big mistake," Hamilton admitted. "My left front tyre was pretty worn so I went a bit wide at the chicane and spun, which is very, very rare.

"Then after that I honestly have to apologise to Paul di Resta. I didn't see him. I had absolutely no clue. I don't know what happened but I got a penalty for something, which is to be expected, I guess, sometimes. So I apologise to him."

Button went on to win the grand prix, which Hamilton felt was a fair result.

"Congratulations to Jenson, he was pushing me hard the whole race and the better man won today," he said.

Hamilton was confident that McLaren would have had a one-two on pure speed, which he felt was an ideal way to head into the break between now and the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of August.

"I think we can definitely say the team have done a fantastic job," said Hamilton. "For us to both be the most competitive this weekend I think is a fantastic way to go into the break.

"Of course we would have loved a one-two. I feel like I let the team down a little bit. But we'll bounce back at the next race."

Another Button win by stealth with no one noticing him until he’s in the lead.

I certainly noticed him as he worked his way past Vettel. I also found him hard to miss as he battled with team-mate Hamilton. Good on McLaren for having the guts to let their drivers race AS USUAL... something that never fails to make RBR and Ferrari faint at the thought of. Team orders all the way when it comes to those two squads.

Good pass on Alonso which is no mean feat. All in all a very mature and sensible race. No unnecessary risks and knowing that the car wasn’t the fastest at early in the race.

Then to cap it all he nearly took out di Resta and the guy behind (can’t remember who that was). It was stupid for him to not wait until there was a bit of a gap and the penalty was just.

He possesses a racer's instinct, and had the lead at stake. He said he didn't see Di Resta at all, which is supported by the analysis of footage, but I doubt BBC 5 Live commentary would've gone into that.

Furthermore, you say Hamilton's switch of tyres was a "rookie" mistake. It also seems that BBC 5 Live missed the massive factor that caused the cock-up... radio-communication failure.

Er, I was meaning he played it cool and took it steady. Certainly for the early part of the race Button was just in the background until the right time.

Oh don’t give me that racer’s instinct crap - they all have that so that excuse doesn't wash! It was a mind fart, simple as that.

Did you not see the spin and recovery from on-board Hamilton’s car? It was bloody close - I actually winced when I saw him swing the car roudn and the di resta getting pretty close! If he couldn’t see the white, green and orange car coming towards him then I would be concerned. The camera picked it up clearly so I don’t believe for one minute that any driver in that situation wouldn’t have seen the car coming towards them. Ok he wouldn’t have seen the Lotus, the Williams is debateable but he would have definitely seen the Force India. Those darn Force India's with their cloaking device!

The Radio 5 commentary said the penalty was harsh but understandable.

The switch of tyres wasn’t what I was referring too. His spin with no pressure on him was a rookie mistake. Got on the kerbs too much and around he went. I don't think the radio failure didn’t come out until after the race so of course it wouldn’t be picked up!

Just a thought. Jenson is only twelve points behind Hamilton, despite having an extra retirement. They certainly are turning out to be more evenly matched in terms of results this year. JB has actually been on the podium more.

Well, if you'd have tuned into the BBC's F1 Forum with your best mate Eddie Jordan, then you WOULD have known.

It's not as easy as you make out to see the oncoming Force India... one blink and it's gone. And that's using a propped-up camera!

I'm not saying he didn't deserve the penalty, though. Di Resta had to go onto the grass, so I knew some form of punishment would be on its way...

He's an excellent, excellent racer. It's just Vettel's, Hamilton's and Alonso's fanboys that claim he is nowhere near as good.

He's done more than enough to ensure his reputation as a brilliant talent.

So that would be after the race then? I've got more interesting things to do than listen to that vomit inducing shortarsed arrogant tit. I come on here for the Vettel bashing. This bunch are much better at it than Eddie Jordan(!) :hehe:

I'm not so sure. Probably best to agree to disagree.

I certainly think he's the smarter of the two, in terms of thinking about the race on the whole. Take Monza 2010 for example; JB took a decision that nobody else on the grid did. They all went for a low-downforce setup with no F-duct, JB decided to whack on the downforce and make use of the F-duct. He could well have won that race, but the Ferrari just had the advantage. Of course, it's all balanced out in the end, Lewis' extreme aggression has won him a number of races. Just look at last week's race. Whilst Jenson started to really pick up the pace just before his retirement, in that race Lewis had the measure of him and I don't think anyone could really deny that.

They both have their assets. Their driving styles complement each other so well. Arguably the best partnership on the grid. 8-)

I'd keep your head down now Denthúl. That's blasphemy. We all know that occasionally Hamilton lets Button win. :rotfl:
