Well he's faster than Webber and Bourdais atleast. I'm not sure I agree with this image he has as a supremely fast driver. Fast? Yes. But abnormally fast? I don't think so. What he is, is inconsistent and seriously lacking maturity. Not to mention his dubious overtaking record.
As for rising talent, I think I'd rather place a bet on someone like Kobayashi.
Kobayashi is nowhere near being as fast as Vettel.
Ok, I've got to say in the not-nice way:
In a couple of years time, Vettel will kick everyone's bottom, people; just remember that.
I didn't say he was as fast, I said he was possibly a rising star. There's more to driving a F1 car than speed alone. Sometimes I just wonder if Vettel has that raw instinct that the best drivers seem have when they're wheel to wheel. Thus far, for me at least, he doesn't. With people like Alonso and Hamilton you get that raw speed and then something else as well, that ability to slug it out with other drivers on the track. With drivers like Button, who isn't typically an edge of your seat driver, you get great tactics and consistency. With Vettel I see speed and not a lot of anything else.
You can't pick a "possibly rising star" if you are McLaren's team director, though.
They picked Hamilton in 2007 and Vettel was definitely a rising star when Alonso's seat became available. That's two rising stars in one season, if Mclaren had pulled the deal off. Back in 2007 it was probably a good move to go for him, especially when you consider how Heikki performed, but if the oppertunity presents itself in the future, I can think of better candidates than Vettel.
But I'm not saying McLaren should sign Kobayashi, although I'd find it pretty entertaining if they did.
Well, Hamilton was a "rising star"; not "possibly". They knew he was going to be real good, that's why the chose him; also, he grew up at McLaren, so that helped in giving him a seat in 2007.
Vettel would have been a little risk back in 2008, but he already had pulled off some very interesting performances with Toro Rosso or BMW; you could see (I did, at least) he was terribly talented already.
Kobayashi is different.. I am sure he is a very good driver, he pulled off a couple of very nice overtaking manoeuvres in the last races in 2009 and also this year, but he just isn't comparable to Vettel.
Kovalainen looked fairly quick at Renault but he "withered" at McLaren, perhaps overshadowed by Lewis Hamilton.
