SPEED reports;

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has admitted he is still interested in securing the services of Sebastian Vettel.

Whitmarsh was highly critical of the 23-year-old German recently, describing him as a "crash kid" after punting Jenson Button out of the Belgian Grand Prix.

"Under pressure this year, Sebastian is making just too many mistakes," the Briton said in an interview with Sport Bild.

"Also his collision with Mark Webber in Turkey, for me, was 95 percent his fault."

But when looking around for a replacement for Fernando Alonso at the end of 2007, McLaren offered then Toro Rosso rookie Vettel a deal that was vetoed by contract holders Red Bull.

Whitmarsh confirmed: "I am open and honest enough to admit it.

"Sebastian is one of the great and promising talents, and we at McLaren wanted to have him.

"We were not able to sign him at that time," the Briton confirmed.

Vettel is now signed up with Red Bull Racing until 2012.

"If he continues to develop so fantastically, then at the end of his contract I will try once again to get him," revealed Whitmarsh.

i read that earlier today... Guess Whitmarsh didnt mind him crashing into Button hehe  or is still grateful for all the pts he gave them at Turkey :)

Ah well... i guess the worst for Vettel moving to Mclaren is for him getting used to his name constantly mispeled as Vettle.
But Vettele probably wants a Ferrari...... like Don Schumi.

McLaren will want to hold onto Lewis and Jenson for as long as they can. Firstly because they are both world champions and both have the chance of doing it again this year. Secondly they are both British which means most of the British fans support McLaren by default rather than say Williams or Virgin.

He probably would've been better than Hekki.

Plus, just like little Piquet Mclaren could ask him to crash for Lewis and no one would be slightly suspicious :whip:

Vettel won't go to Ferrari whilst Alonso is there, he'd be terrified of Alonso,

I think Mercedes could make a massive play for Vettel in 2013. Schuey will be retired, Rosberg in, need another German driver to keep the superteam thing happening and Ross Brawn by then will have everything sorted out to make a dominant winning package. Yes, Rosberg/Vettel in a Mercedes F1 team. And you thought there was fireworks when he was Mark's teammate hahaha, until 2013, you ain't seen nothin yet.....

I prefer Rosberg..IMO he is a bigger talent than Vettel and his driving skills are better..
BTW I think Vettel will go to Ferrari..

I prefer Rosberg too.

I just don't get why a team like McLaren would want Vettel, they could have almost anyone.

Not wanting to sound to harsh here but IMO Seb can't drive an F1 car properly yet. He's quick if left alone out front, but the minute he's involved in any confrontation he usually crashing into them or drops it off the track to let them passed.

Not that impressed with him so far, but he's still young so we'll see what 2012 brings.
