Nelson Piquet, currently a test driver for Renault, has affirmed that he is sure his Formula 1 race debut will come in 2008. He has set a target of replacing race driver Giancarlo Fisichella by the end of the 2007 season.
Piquet has also stated that he would be happy to follow in Anthony Hamilton’s footsteps and debut for a smaller team, although it would depend on the contract he was offered. “I am sure somebody is going to give me the opportunity on the grid next year,” he said.
Piquet also noted that it wasn’t always better to test for the top teams rather than the back-runners. “You are not going to keep testing forever,” he explained. “One day you are going to go like Davidson – go to a bit of a worse team but try to have a shot at becoming a race driver.”
