McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa has admitted that the chances of him returning to a race seat and lifting a winner’s trophy is now unlikely. “I have been on the podium before,” he explained. “but what every driver really wants to do is win.”
De la Rosa blames his lack of success on starting his career too late. “My biggest handicap was dedicating myself to radio controlled car racing until the age of 14. For Formula 1, you really have to start in go-karts when you are really young. If I had done things differently, I would probably be where I am today at the age of 25, not 35.”
