Well, what immediately springs to mind is:i. a proper apology in which Hamilton accepts his fair share of the blame for lying;
ii. some form of internal discipline at McLaren (race ban, fine etc.); and
iii. for the FIA to fully investigate Hamilton's actions.
I know. It's just the gist of things that I get from most forum members.
That sounds pretty reasonable, although the 3rd point is somewhat open-ended, and maybe that's the one who should be done before the 2nd point.

most forum members agree that McLaren made a bad decision. Most forum members agree Hamilton is apart of that bad decision. Most forum members dont like him getting off while the rest of the team Heikki included could/will take the fall.

Well, Whitmarsh didn't think an FIA investigation was necessary before suspending and then axing Ryan, and bringing his own future at the team into doubt.

Firing Ryan was a (very bad) knee-jerk reaction.

No, it was an attempt to deflect the blame from Hamilton and any other team-members.
