* a front wing of reduced width, down from from 1800mm to 1650mm

Won't this bring back the problem of cars struggling to follow one another in corners? :/

the only reason they made the wings wider was in the hope it gave more downforce and allowing cars to slip stream. This hasn't been the case. DRS has been a breakthrough in this regard so this front wing width can be binned. Although there is mention of the DRS in this story not being concrete in FOTAs rules.

Not much is mentioned on power plants either, just fuel consumption.

Finally!

Don't get too excited there spanky... no mention of nixing the 1.6L T

It's coming :-)

Although, I think if they make it a 6, dump KERS and let them loose on the HP, while at the same time, reducing aero effect/importance I think that would be a compromise everyone could accept and that would keep F1 more where it should be.

Although, I still would love them to get gutsy and remove all engine specs and simply give them fuel allocations - do what you can with this much energy :-)

That would be interesting; my 3.5L V6 has a 16 gallon tank and will take me 300 miles minimum (even if I drive aggressively), If F1 engineers can get through 200 miles on 16 gallons of fuel with a 6 litre V12 Turbo; that'd be some feat... bring back the challenge to F1 design!

You're saying it would require guts, therein lies the reason why it won't happen. :hehe:

Rory's been busy, from that article he drafted the FIA version and the FOTA version.

I guess you'll know what people (on here at least) will say should Ferrari do particularly well in 2013.

That it was just all an attempt to shake the relevance of someone like Adrian Newey?

AMUS reporting 4 pots set to be dumped - If it's true all I can say is Woo Hoo!

Bot Translation

FIA President Jean Todt and engine manufacturers in Barcelona will meet on Saturday (21.5). All indications that then buried the four-cylinder engine for 2013. Three of the four engine manufacturers express concerns.

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had already indicated it motor und sport in his interview with car. The new engine regulations, which requires from four turbos 2013 1.6 L engine, KERS and direct injection, is not in stone. "The FIA has made their decision based on incorrect assumptions." "You have not considered the side effects."

The 80-year British assumed that the engine manufacturer will take the initiative to convince the FIA of economically being the best for the formula one, to go with the proven eight-cylinder engines. "The manufacturers and teams can be sent to the FIA and tell her that they have thought about and are come to the conclusion that a decision which appeared to be correct at the time, is wrong in today's."

Cosworth F1 four-cylinder engine can not build

This has happened. Cosworth has informed Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault to that one is after all concept studies not in a position to build a competitive four cylinder turbo with the available financial resources until 2013. Ferrari was from the outset against the four idea. "That is not to the DNA of formula 1," President Luca di Montezemolo had loudly made policy for the retention of the v 8 engines.

Auch Mercedes has reconsidered the situation. Because Renault wants to make any commitment for a longer-term involvement in formula one, the Swabia are concerned that at the end of Mercedes and Ferrari would barricade it, equip the half field with engines. "We can't that." "We agree to only the cylinder, if there is a guarantee, that the costs in a period of five years by 30 per cent", Mercedes sports Chief Norbert Haug said. According to recent calculations, the opposite is the case.

"Pure" alternative only a political move

With ex-Peugeot engineers to build the announcement of ex-team boss Craig Pollock, a formula 1 engine to the cylinder formula called "Pure", no one takes seriously in the paddock. This is seen as a political move to prove that a new engine formula attracts new manufacturer.

Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault want to compete but not against unnamed competition. You had hoped for entry from VW, Honda or Toyota. But just from VW, who have been strong for a downsizing of racing engines, comes on the subject of formula 1 entry rather refusal as consent.

Todt is prepared

Jean Todt the manufacturer needed to reform the engine regulations. He had while in his press conference at the Grand Prix, Turkey said that the FIA wants further stick to their plan, but also admitted: "If one can convince me otherwise, I am ready for a discussion."

In an interview with auto motor und sport of the French said two months ago: "It is not my kind of autocratic push through decisions." I listen to me rather proposals by experts and try in the decision-making process to achieve as much consistency as possible. "Why should I ignore, that the experts bring more expertise and more engineering knowledge as myself?"

I think the late 90s cars were the best looking if you ignore the 2008 cars as they will never come back. i really like the DRS. it will take a few years to get the zones right for each track but overtaking need not be like NASCAR, all overtaking needs to be is to allow the quicker car to get past the slower car, because in the past this wouldnt happen coz you had to be like 3 seconds faster. That would kill races because wherever you were after lap 1 would be where you start, coz if you had a different strategy you couldnt get past and your strategy was wasted. Now you can get past and by the end of the race the person you overtook comes back to you as your strategies meet up at the end. you dont want anyone being able to overtake. just if someone has caught up to the back of someone then you should be able to get past. Turkey being the exception because everyone was overtaking each other.

Until I hear it from a reliable English source, BBC, Autosport etc, I won't believe that the 1.6 L4T has been scrapped; I don't believe that the FIA would do such a massive U-Turn so readily.

Why english? most engine manufacturers are not english...

Anyway... finally some hope into avoiding the crappy I4. They want to save costs: keep the V8. They want to appear greener... V6 with some fuel restrictions........

About the front wing... i never understood the stupidity behind increasing the size of the front wing while narrowing the front wheels, to encourage passing. That makes absolutely no sense!!

The one thing that impairs the cars following is aerodynamics; the front wing is an aero device. Increasing its size, means increasing the dependency of the car on it. Losing efficiency (ie trailing a car) makes the car less capable. The absolute no brainer solution was to increase the slick front tire's width (even just a little, if they are so concerned with cornering speeds) and decrease the size or complexity of the front wing.

That encourages passing. I can't believe they never did this, instead they came up with the stupid button and a flashing green light to show its system-go... to introduce a moveable aero part, which was not allowed to begin with. Makes me wonder... why is other moveable aero not allowed then?? what about the s pirit of the rules??
