As a black man i should be kinda happy about his election but life in Britain has made me cynical of all politicians.

Congtrats to him but he still has to prove to me that he isn't like the rest of them

That's my take also 8-ball. I'm happy, but still, the proof is in the pudding. I hope he is able to do everything that he has said during his campaign. I also hope the politics of Washington change as a result. If you saw the look on President Elect Obama face last night during his exceptance speech, it wasn't like he just won the Presidency, but as if he inherited a touch project and already began working on it. I hope he can use some of his ground game in this new administration, such as using technology to get citizens mobilized, and providing some transparencies into his administration. These are only things I can hope for. We will see for sure...

I feel the same. My own experience of politics and what I've learned in history has made me very cynical and sceptical about politicians, and indeed many humans.

In this campaign, I was not entirely sure who I wanted to win. To be honest, a mixture of Clinton, Obama and McCain would have suited me. Between McCain and Obama, I'd probably have voted for the latter if I were an American. McCain seems a decent man, is experienced and clearly loves his country, but his campaign was fiasco from start to finish - it was not just down to Obama outspending him. I know what Obama stands for, but I know very little about McCain's views. Palin, too, was a disaster. I can't believe there are some people who think this woman has a future in politics. That said, it was always going to be tough for McCain to win anyway: the Republicans and Bush are highly unpopular, and global economy is a shambles. I think the BBC summed it up well last night when they said that McCain did well to even get as far as he did. He took his defeat with dignity and honour, too. Yes, he was defeated, but he showed what a great person he is. It will be interesting to see how things work out for Obama over the next lot of months. Some of his ideas are pretty socialist, but he'll not be able to be like that when he takes office. Partisanship is not as strong in America as it is in, say, Britain, and, in terms of Iraq, simply leaving isn't an option. The situation require careful handling. The campaign was very exciting and it's an historic day for America. Congratulations to Obama. I look forward with interest to see what direction he takes America. One thing is for certain anyway: America needs change.

Why do you non-Americans want Obama?

Does anyone realize what his economic plans are going to do to this country, and in turn, the world? How does handing a check to those who need jobs create jobs? It makes no sense. Raising taxes on corporations is a quick way to raise the cost of goods for all consumers and kill jobs. His plan to increase the capitol gains tax will keep people from investing in the stock market, sending the economy even further down the crapper.

I hope I'm wrong, but I will be here to say I told you so to all Obama sheeple.

What puts me off Obama are his economic policies. Whilst I think wealthy businesses etc. can afford to pay a little bit more, I'm not really a fan of tax and spend policies. McCain's policies on the economy weren't fool proof either. The government's deficit is so large it's barely believable. Tax cuts would only make that worse. This would provide immediate relief, but could cause problems in the longer term. The reason people went for Obama on the economy was because his policies offer some immediate relief and the Republican's mismanagement of the economy and Wall Street's antics have got "trickle down" economics an unfair bad name.

considering the world views do not necessarily concern the economics of America but the things they see the most, and that is war mongering by Bush, i think Obama was a breathe of fresh air in that case while McCain would continue down the same path as Bush.

The American economy is important to how the world functions, certainly in Britain. Wars, however, are pretty important things as well. :hehe: Sometimes war is necessary, but it should be avoided where possible. The biggest thing that annoys me about US foreign policy is that they won't talk to anybody. If you talk, there's a chance of progress. If you refuse to communicate, divisions just become further entrenched. Obama is right, then, in my view, to offer to talk to states that don't like the West etc.. Contrary to what McCain believes, talking to them doesn't mean you are suddenly going to best buddies with them. I guess I'm showing my ambivalence about who I wanted to win. :hehe:

Also his views on cleaner energy. America have been appalling under Bush on this but Obama wants 80% reductions by 2050.
Theres no way it will be easy, you cant put poloicies like his into practice without any pain but he sees the bigger picture. Lets hope he keeps the vision. I think its great news, and what a motivating speaker he is!

To be fair to McCain, he is big on the environment as well. It's one of the things that got him into strife in the Republican party.

Why do American's and non-Americans want Obama? Thats easy, its because we're tired of Bush and the Republican party. Simple as that.

McCain would have been a decent president too, but he's too old, and no one wants to see that idiot Palin as president.

Clearly economic wise Obama has revise his plans. If he wants to see what happens when you give benefits to anyone and everyone just look at Britain. Gordon is borrowing money hand over a fist to stop the country going into recession because he hasn't got enough money to continue the numerous spending policies he has. However I do think that the more you make from society then the more you should pay back in taxes so the key is getting the right balance.

Non Americans like Obama because he is eloquent and intelligent. A vast change from a guy that runs around the world "spreading freedom" by starting wars with them.

That he is, and even if he was fully white i would still think the same of him, i think its great for the African Americans that Obama has come along but to be honest i like the guy for who he is, his race had nothing to do with my opinion of him.
