correct... the stewards should look at the situation and just simply decide which of the two should be classified ahead... there was no ill intent from either side... no penalty needed...

I wonder if Toyota's appeal would go through, then. I doubt it, because of the rules on appealing drive-throughs, but it would be nice if it did. Jarno very much deserved that third-place finish.

They should have a strong case. Here's hoping.

They should clarify their rules then this nonsense wouldn't happen! They should have just switched him to 4th not penalised him right out of the points.

Their rules are not to pass a car under safety car or yellow flag conditions. However, if the stewards imposed the penalty without consulting both sides, then they weren't to know that McLaren told Lewis to let Jarno through. Jarno should not have been penalised at all if this is the case.

I know thats the rules but the stewards are inconsistent with application so the drivers and teams dont know where they are.Look at Spa last year.

Indeed, this will long continue. Sadly the FIA haven't learned any sort of lesson it seems.
I thought their handling of the protests was very good though.

In this case it would not be inconsistent, it would be down to a lack of information.

Yes I realise the stewards decision may have been due to lack of information but Lewis not knowing if he could pass Trulli despite Trulli being off the track , and the team not knowing either (because when they did seek clarification last year they were given an answer which was not in agreement with the stewards)This inconsistency is what triggered the incident. The rules are not clear , not applied consistently and no one knows what they can or cannot do.

The rules, in this case, are perfectly clear. You cannot pass under the safety car unless it's unavoidable (i.e. the person in front leaves the track or slows down due to mechanical problems). I think it's just that they didn't ask what went on and instead just saw that Trulli had passed Hamilton after going off-track, then applied a penalty.

Trulli did leave the track.

yep, and then Hamilton tried to give it back because they were afraid of being penalized... what a crazee situation... and in the end its us race fans that lose... (as well as poor Truli in this case with NO points!)

Yes, and Lewis passed him. Then he was told, by the team, to yield the position (after Spa, would you want to take that chance?). So Lewis slowed and Jarno, thinking Lewis had some kind of problem (he had slowed and was off-line) carried on past him, thus earning a penalty.

Yes it is a crazy stupid situation.

Ive just watched the replay again! lewis was ahead of Trulli way before the safety car came out, way before the SV/RK incident? I didnt see how he got ahead because that wasnt shown but he was clearly running ahead? So I dont understand this. It was way before the safety car came out??
