Some fun responses from the drivers in the paddock at Jerez, where Brawn and Renault signed off their testing yesterday, responding to the news that the FIA has changed the system now rewarding the driver with the most wins as world champion.

Nico Rosberg said, “What nonsense is this?”, Jenson Button, who could well end up benefitting from it said, “I understand the logic behind it and it’s interesting. It’s an incentive to try to win but it also looks risky to me. After 9 races you could get a driver who’s already won the title and can take the rest of the season off, while the driver in second is only 18 points behind!”

Lewis Hamilton said a curt, “I have no opinion on this.”

Meanwhile a delighted Bernie Ecclestone has tipped Button to be a factor under the new rules,
“I suppose an awful lot will depend on these [new] regulations, but if Brawn has got it right, then there is a chance that for the first three races we could maybe see Jenson winning.

“Now that it is not points that decides the championship, if he has three races in his pocket then it is not bad - although I suppose in the end you have to look at the old timers like [Fernando] Alonso, Kimi [Raikkonen], Felipe [Massa] and Mr [Lewis] Hamilton.”

This also throws down the possibility of having a champion with 4-5 races to spare or even ruling out a particular driver from any practical chance of wining with a lot of season to go.
No 2007 ,2008 like finishes.
Sometimes i wonder these bosses are paid so much how can they still get it wrong on this monumental level.

I don't like the idea that a guy can cruise around in second all season, not take any risks and still win the championship. At the same time, it would be good to see the whole field competing for something.
Reducing the title race down to those who win races and no-one else will only serve to widen the gap between the big and small teams. It'll be like 'first past the post' voting systems which inevitably lead to two party political systems. A couple of teams will emerge on top as usual and they will be the only ones able to contest the WDC and all the while they will get more successful and more wealthy while the others slip away.
This will lead to the other large manufacturers reaching a point where they can no longer justify the costs to their shareholders and will pull out.
This points system basically undermines all the work that has been done over the winter to prevent teams from pulling out!

For teams i think Teams Championship is more important, and that still follows the same system(i think it is ,not sure) ,so they can still get money out if F1

Mostly Unfair.
Last seasons race was not fair under any circumstances.
Lewis has talent no doubt? but that race and title should of been Massa's.
He pushed throught out the whole race to keep the whole pack behind?
But from Toyotas mistake Massa lost out? maybe this wil give the divers a much needed push to strive for the best

I think for the sake of season longevity, the points ruling was a sound one. The reason race wins was abolished was because of the Schumacher days and if the testing is anything to go by. There are some big gaps in performance. Constructors faults maybe, but at least with the old ruling people had a greater chance to the end.

I can see a SPL football situation arising

JB is right in many ways. Despite my own personal feelings towards Lewis, he has talent.
But the rce was not the same. But the same can be said for the 2007 season when he had a problem nd lost the title to Kimi
So Karma has worked.

Bleh... I don't like this new rule one bit!

So a driver can win 5 races, while DNF every other race. Another driver can win 4, coming in 2nd for every other race... and all the other drivers winning no more than 3 races. And the driver winning the 5 is crowned F1 Champ... Bleh...

In reality, the situation you have described is extreme and most likely won't happen. This thing will only have the intended effect if the 09 regulations allow for more overtaking. If they turn out to not to improve the spectacle then Ferrari (most likely :D ) will run away with the title.

extreme yes, but not impossible LOL
All I know is I can't wait for the next 8 days to hurry up and get here.... bring on the 09-10 season!!!

I dont like this new system, they should have changed the points system like fota wanted. With this new system a driver could pack it up after race 8 if they won every race up to that point. I think its flawed.

What a stupid idea what do the FIA think they will achieve from this apart from alienating the smaller or less experienced teams who have little or no chance of winning but can still have something of a fight for points amongst themselves.
what happens If its all over half way through the season do we all go back to totting up points in our heads as if it were 2008 again?
This has already spoilt my much anticipated wait for the 2009 season :irked:

What annoys me is if there are two people in a title fight ok?

Lets say LH and Massa

and Massa crashes and LH comes 3rd it don't count towards the title.

Or of The Ferrari's Engine blows and Lewis only gets 3rd

it don't punish failures all that much
