This decision could well play into BrawnGP's hands: have the brawny boyz (mostly one of them) take the first 6 or 8 race wins just before their performance falls off because the competition finally catches up by then. Title decided!

Mostly Unfair.
Last seasons race was not fair under any circumstances.
Lewis has talent no doubt? but that race and title should of been Massa's.
He pushed throught out the whole race to keep the whole pack behind?
But from Toyotas mistake Massa lost out? maybe this wil give the divers a much needed push to strive for the best

Why did they not just leave it as it was.... we just had two of the most exciting and dramatic seasons for years, and the go and f*** it up... the title could be done and dusted by the time they go to spa and so who will be interested in driving in the last races... i know this could happen with the points system only a driver like MS would have it rapped up that quick on points as he was good, but at least with points there can be twists at the end of the season.
This way we could know the winner far to early....
Me being a mclaren supporter would really hate booking singapore then two weeks before lewis or kimi or massa have already rapped it up it would be such an anti climax....and lets say lewis or Alonso have a winning streak and its all over by spa... how dead would monza be not having the red car in with a chance, even if its the other way around and massa or kimi have won all the other races will be boring ( not saying this will happen) but with points your still in with a chance if you are second each week you can still turn it around.....At least i have booked Barcelona.Germany and Belgian to go to.. after that if its already won it will be crap to watch......

In order to win the WDC half way through the season you would have to win every race up to and including The Nurb. How likely is that? Im up for giving it a go. It should make no difference to the exitement of each race. Im getting some Stella Artois in me fridge on Thursday so its nice and cold.

For anyone who says, finishing 2nd all the time and winning the WDC is a bad thing. I ask how many of you supported Kubica last year. Did he not deserve the chance to fight for the championship. His performance last year was outstanding, and that fact that he was in with a shout till just about the last race was an astouding achievement that highlighted the guys talent. However under this system, it all would've meant nothing.

I really hope the FOTA do something about all of this. Does everyone seriously think that drivers don't want to win. Just ask Kimi. The guy said he doesn't care about anything but wins, but have we really seen him drive differently. Did Massa not prove he's going all out for wins after diving around Hamiliton in Hungary. Did Lewis not prove the same thing in Spa fighting with Kimi. Did Alonso not drive his heart out in Fuji. The drivers already push for wins.

If anything, we should change the quali format. Instead have everyone running on fumes going for pole, and then in the race allow the guys in 2nd and 3rd to pick aggressive stratigies to be able take the lead. That in my opinion is how we'll make more battles for the lead.

Well said about Kubica but i disagree about the quali thing. Just leave it as is it was fine last year and gave us a gr8 final race

Had this system been used all the time the last time it would have made a difference(apart from last year) is 1989 where Senna would have taken the title of Alain Prost.

and what of the other guys if they are not in a position to win then they might as well just pack up and go home. but then theres the constructors points there to keep things interesting. its funny how the constructor champion might not be the winningest constructor.....

F1 just keeps shooting itself in the foot and not listening to the fans or the teams for that matter!!!

I can see a driver with three or four wins being awarded the WDC. Talk about flat screen TV's getting broken, wait until the constructor championship shakes out as described in bud's post.

I cannot put into words how upset I am; it seems that the public have been ignored, given that we understood the whole thing to have been unpopular in the surveys.

We all know this will take an element away from many championships, i.e. the "Kubica" type element if staying in the championship by consistency.

This has been driven partly by making it "easier for the public to understand". But seriously, if they really think the public are as thick as they clearly do, then the new system will be a problem anyway, because we now have two conflicting systems and will need to work out which one is relevant for a particular driver. All places apart from world champion will be decided by points. So the guy lying second with more points than the guy in third could have less wins than the guy in third, who could actually be the closest challenger for the championship. i.e. the guy in second may not be mathematically able to win the championship with a couple of races to go but the third placed guy could. What a farce! How do you explain that to your casual fan? It's a bit like only counting some of the races like they tried in the 80s.

I would like to place a bet on Lewis Hamilton pulling out of the race in Melbourne since he won't be able to win it and will want to save his engine in case McLaren sort the aero for the next race...

I think I shall have to hang up my F1 watching boots and look for an honest sport; anyone want my British GP tickets?!

FOTA 'concerned' about FIA decisions

The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) has expressed its 'concern' about the FIA's decision to impose a radical rules shake up on the sport.

The FIA announced on Tuesday that it was rejecting a FOTA proposal to revise the points structure in F1, and instead was to introduce a system whereby the world title would be handed to the driver with the most wins.

Furthermore, the FIA has announced plans for a voluntary budget cap to be introduced - offering teams that sign up to limit their budget to £30 million per season the chance to be as competitive as those with unlimited spending power.

The plans have not gone down well with FOTA, which felt in recent weeks that it had made much headway with plans to reduce budgets by 50% for 2010 through a series of cost-cutting measures.

A statement from FOTA chairman Luca di Montezemolo said: "With regard to the decisions taken today by the FIA World Council, FOTA would like to express its disappointment and concern at the fact that these have been taken in a unilateral manner.

"The framework of the regulations as defined by the FIA, to be applicable as from 2010, runs the risk of turning on its head the very essence of Formula 1 and the principles that make it one of the most popular and appealing sports.

"Given the timeframe and the way in which these modifications were decided upon, we feel it is necessary to study closely the new situation and to do everything, especially in these difficult times, to maintain a stable framework for the regulations without continuous upheaval, that can be perplexing and confusing for car manufacturers, teams, the public and sponsors."
