In the last few laps everyone was on wet tyres except for Button who chose extreme wets and the two Toyotas who didn't pit.

WTF why was button on the extream wets

hmm, i didn't know some teams went for the extremes. They probably did it cause they have nothing to lose, i could have easily pissed it down (like it did minutes after the race!).

But surely, surely when so much is at stake one cannot deliberately let anyone go by - that would be artificially influencing the championship and totally contra
to the purist's ethos of racing!

What you fail to understand is when you can no longer control your car you have no choice but to let everyone go by. The difference of speed was probably 30 or 40 MPH. Get in your car, go 5 mph, and try to get in the way or race your buddy's car that's going 35mph. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. He had no other choice and you are being totally unrealistic.
