From autosport.com:

Glock not aware of championship influence

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Sunday, November 2nd 2008, 22:18 GMT

Timo Glock said he was not aware that he was influencing the championship over the final laps of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Toyota driver was running in fourth place, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who needed that position in order to secure the title, ahead of the final lap.

Glock had decided not to pit when the rain began to fall at Interlagos, a decision that put him ahead of Hamilton.

The German, however, was on dry weather tyres and was unable to keep Hamilton at bay, the Briton going on to pass him at the final corner to win the title.

Glock admitted he had no idea he was in a position to decide the championship.

"No, I was concentrating on my race. I didn't know that I was the magic rule in the championship and in the end, I didn't look for that," Glock told reporters after the race.

"I just tried to do my best, and in the end it was a poker game. We stayed out on dry tyres and for the last lap it was just too much rain for us. We were not unlucky but the poker game did not turn out for us."

He added: "I really don't know where Lewis overtook me because four cars past me left and right, left and right. I was just concentrating to keep the car on the track. That was the only way.

"To handover and help Lewis or help Felipe, definitely not. In a race situation like this, you can never plan before and definitely there were no thoughts about that.

"When you see the laptime, the lap before I did a 1m28, and on that last lap I did a 1m48. It was just not driveable anymore."

The Toyota driver said he felt sorry for Felipe Massa, but he was sure the Brazilian understands his position.

"I think he is the guy who understands quite well that I could not do anything different to that what I did at the end of the last lap. I am sorry for him, but in the end the last race is definitely the decider of the championship.

"But the main point is the 17 races before, and there were more races where Felipe was a bit unlucky and didn't score the points because of technical problems. But in the end, to lose a championship on the last lap is hard - but I tried my best and I cannot change it."

I can easily believe that Glock wasn't aware of the championship significance. Given that several cars slipped past at once, he may not even have known who was challenging and passing him.

not just the wetness tyre temps would have dropped dude

Yes, I think that would be the case, and is the crux of the matter.

Not to mention brake temps. His penultimate lap was around 1m29s, which indicates he already had temp issues. On the last lap it looks like Glock runs wide at Murghulo (turn 10), that puts his car in the wet line and he never recovers enough grip to run up the hill. My opinion, of course.

Cant help but feel a little confused as to why Glock's last 2 lap times tumbled so dramatically .
The track didn't seem wet and there were other drivers on dry tires .

There are lots of reasons given in this thread and on other threads.

Track becoming slippery. Tyres and brakes cooling down. Trulli who wasn't involved in the championship decider also slowed down. Looks pretty cut and dried to me.

This is becoming tedious. In the last twenty-four hours, the Tifosi have revealed how bitter and hypocritical they are and people who have just watched Formula One yesterday are registering and spouting a load of rubbish. So, let's clear this up once and for all. It was starting to rain heavier and heavier. Some parts of the track were reasonably dry and other parts had mini-rivers flowing across its surface. On dry tyres, that's challenging enough to deal with. And, as the rain on the track and from the sky cools your tyres and brakes down, you have to go slower, thus putting less energy through the tyres, and using the brakes less. In doing this, your tyre and brake temperatures fall further, so you have less grip and stopping power. And, again, because of this, you go even slower and put less energy through the tyres etc.. It's a vicious cycle. There was no conspiracy. Glock took a gamble and it didn't pay off. Deal with it.

I agree..

It was a good race last night dont ruin it. I was upset like alot of people, and sure alot of people were happy. But we were all as f1 fans out of our seats on the rollercoaster last lap. Which is great for the sport. Roll on 2009 Renault vs BMW

I do want to point out one little thing that really disturbs me.
When cars were pitting for dry tires in the beginning of the race, the track was still so wet at some parts that you couldn´t see anything from the T-Cam at all, but STILL those drivers made better laptimes......In the end the track wasn´t even wet, there was a clear view(only a few drops) on the T-Cam and I really can´t see why the 2 Tototas were doing so bad......Seems to me that something isn´t right here. If a driver is the key player in the championship battle so to say than why doesn´t the media want to talk anything about him??

you do realise how much more rubber would have been put down on the track by the end of the race compared to the start of the race. water plus rubbered in track = slippery

And that rubber came to affect 2 drivers only on the last laps of the race?
Dude you really need to study some more about rubber :rofl:

I am not an avid formula 1 fan - just a layperson who supports Britain in sport so correct me if I am wrong. Why should Vettel do fine with his tyres but not Glock in the last stages of the race? Again, I may have been seeing things but didn't Glock run wide when Hamilton passed him? Again I am probably wrong but even if one is losing grip in the wet is it not ones's duty as a driver to be as difficult to pass as possible in order to be fair to everyone? In a crucial situation when one is slipping all over the place shouldn't one do ones best to obstruct the ones behind you and thus stay as close to the race line as possible? There is no suggestion of any foul play - just madness by everyone! :banghead: Poor old Massa!
