A delegation is heading to London this week in a bid to save the axed Canadian Grand Prix.

Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay will accompany a Quebec province minister, Raymond Bachand, as well as the Canadian federal minister of international trade Michael Fortier, as they meet with Bernie Ecclestone on Thursday, the Montreal radio station CJAD said.

"What we will be discussing is a business deal," Tremblay is quoted as saying by the Canadian business newspaper Financial Post.

"If we do nothing, it is gone."

Fortier said Canada has a five-year contract to stage the Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

"There are three years left on it," he noted. "I believe on the basis of the contract we can move forward."

"It is a surprise to me that we've come to this situation. We will do whatever we can to see that the Grand Prix stays in Montreal," Fortier stated.

Although they are trying to save the Canadian Grand Prix I don't think Bernie will want it on the calwndar because he will proboboly want that space for a grand prix in Asia or the middle east.

Montreal mayor optimistic after meeting

Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay has said he is optimistic that the city will get its Formula One race back on the calendar next season, following a meeting with Bernie Ecclestone in London today.

Tremblay held a two-hour discussion with Ecclestone to get a better understanding of the reasons why the event was dropped - with there having been a dispute over whether any race fees were still owed from previous years.

Speaking to local media, Tremblay said: "We have a better understanding of the issues, we still have a lot of work to do to evaluate all the options, but it is still possible to hold a Grand Prix in Montreal in 2009 and subsequent years."

Montreal city representatives are now expected to try and put together a battle plan to get their finances in shape before attempting to secure the race's future.

Federal International Trade Minister Michael Fortier said: "Many people have offered to help but they are all part of the elements we would need to evaluate in the coming days to determine if the Grand Prix will survive and who will be the promoter and organiser."

I fail to understand how they couls even ask why it was dropped. F1 is a business like anything else. I my clients dont pay me I will have less finance at my disposal and i will put them on notice. same thing here..... I guess you right - however I think they came up with a payment arrangement of some some. if they popped out the money that meeting would be over in a second and we may have the advantage of a longer racecard come 2009

I think they dropped a huge bag of money on the table for Bernie to start reconsidering.

Bernie will probably be counting down the amount of money in the bag right down to the smallest penny and possibly even Shillings, just so that the officials aren't bluffing him. One penny out (or in this case Cent) and he'll throw the bag right back at them.
