Well, Alonso was quick to pour cold water on Piquet's big result:

From F1 Live:

Alonso plays down Piquet podium
The Brazilian got lucky...

Fernando Alonso has played down the impact of his rookie teammate Nelson Piquet's breakthrough podium in the German Grand Prix.

Team boss Flavio Briatore hailed the 22-year-old Brazilian's "amazing race" at Hockenheim, where the ideal timing of the mid-race safety car turned his one-stop strategy into a second place at the chequered flag.

To the Spanish newspaper Diario AS, however, former World Champion Alonso made clear Piquet's achievement was "down to luck."

"It was quite a bad weekend for Nelsinho, but suddenly he got a Safety Car on the best possible lap for him and he is on the podium."

"This is the Safety Car lottery," Alonso explained, insisting that the R28 is not good enough to be racing to the podium on merit.

"Without luck we can only be aiming for seventh or eighth," he added.

In the newspaper, Alonso also bemoaned the car's lack of general traction, and said the problem only has one remedy.

"Yes, wait for next year's car," he said.

A little bit sour again at his teammates boast in form. Same old, same old. :hehe:

Alonso has just stated the truth piquet was nowhere until that safety car came out but that still doesn't diminish his weekend and podium finish

It was nice of him to praise Piquet and say that the result was good for the team.

only 2 points from 4th now :)

a part of me is wondering if alonso should stop taking gambles and just aim for 4,5 or 6th rather than going for glory now. Piquet has done enough this season maybe 2 or 3 more points finishes would be good. Then watch out Renault09

thats what i was thinking, i didnt spot Fernando in the teams celebratory photo post race either!

for all Nelshino's luck he still set a faster lap than Fernando and made less mistakes than Fernando heck Fernando was the one spinning off!!

Alonso didn't have any clear air throughout the race.
He is arrogant and selfish, but that makes him mega... a carbon copy of many drivers. Better than saying nothing at all.

Well done piquet, a lot of luck but he took full advantage of it and it was great to see.

He still has to prove himself but this should give him a boost.

Some people have said he wasn't a good driver that the race strategy was what did it for him.
But he did do well to get 2nd and no one can deny that.
He was almost as fast as Felipe - if not AS fast.

I wonder if some of the drivers ever read these forums? I mean, it could be possible. Nelson Piquet is probably reading this right now. Hi Nelson! Keep it up! :wavey::rofl:

If Fernando is reading this:

Whens the next time Piquet's gonna finish that high?
Let him get his moment of glory.
He's not gonna get cocky at a pretty lowly team like Renault
Besides Alonso wont let him he'll kick him into order

the only disapointment I had was that Piquet didnt put up much of a fight. maybe nerves got to him and maybe he didnt want to risk a podium. But I was hoping he would. and If he was anything like his old man then he would be difficult to pass. And I was hoping he was gonna frustrate LH like he did in france..

but hey, im happy
