JV was a good driver, not an X-Factor driver. He thought he was an X-Factor driver because he beat Schumacher.
When Schumacher went to Ferrari and started building the team around him he thought he could do that as well with British American Tobacco. JV wanted his own team around him, he thought he had the minerals to do all the things outside of the car that Schumacher was doing.
All of a sudden the harsh reality of life came crashing down on JV, he realised he didn't like testing, didn't like fitness, wasn't a team leader, didn't have enough strength of character so he started b!tching. B!tching about everyone and everything and making every excuse under the sun as to why he wasn't so good anymore, now the protective blanket of Williams was taken away.
You see, people criticise Williams, but they actually make their drivers look good. How else could button do so well in his first year and then do so badly at Renault? JV experienced the same thing. When Williams say to their drivers "Shut the f*ck up and drive, we'll do the rest", the drivers don't know how good they got it.
Anyway, JV probably thought his championship win was down to how good he was, when it wasn't. He had a fast car, he had a team that took care of everything and he did an infinite number of miles testing the '97 car before the season started.
