Cracking the midfield

Manor enters an exciting season in 2016, equipped with new Mercedes engines, a technical partnership with Williams and a raft of big-name recruitments. The team spent much of 2015 treading water with year-old Ferrari engines after a remarkable comeback from administration. The team's new name and logo suggests a break from the past, which included the departure of key figures John Booth and Graeme Lowden. In their place come figures such as Dave Ryan, Pat Fry and Nikolas Tombazis and they have been immediately tasked with a step up the grip. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks his newest customer team can challenge the midfield this season and the onus will be on the perennial backmarkers to live up to those expectations early on. Joining the team's ranks is the exciting Pascal Wehrlein, DTM's youngest ever champion, and he has the talent to help spearhead Manor's challenge this year, while Indonesia's Rio Haryanto brings valuable resources to the team. Former sporting director Lowden memorably said the team will have "nowhere to hide" this year with Mercedes engines and the same gearbox and rear suspension as Williams. That assessment is correct and it is now down to Manor to prove what it can do with arguably the most even playing field it has had with its closest rivals since joining the grid as Virgin in 2010.

We’re pleased to welcome @OconEsteban to the team. He’ll be racing alongside @PWehrlein for the rest of the season.

Haryanto's cheque bounced and he is out.

MANOR RACING SUPPORTS RIO HARYANTO’S EFFORTS TO KEEP HIS F1 DREAM ALIVE
Rio is offered a Reserve Driver role for the rest of the 2016 season
10 August 2016, 09.00 BST (CET -1)
Banbury, UK
Manor Racing today announced that it has taken the decision to terminate Rio Haryanto’s Race Driver contract, after he was unable to meet his contractual obligations.
In a bid to keep his Formula 1 dream alive, the team has offered Rio a Reserve Driver role for the remaining nine rounds of the 2016 FIA Formula 1 World Championship.
Dave Ryan, Racing Director
“Rio has been a much-valued member of our team since January, when we signed a contract with him for this season. Some time ago, his management indicated that they were experiencing difficulties honouring the obligations of that contract beyond the Hungarian Grand Prix. Rio’s team have worked tirelessly to try to resolve that situation with his Indonesian backers and we have supported those efforts as much as possible, including allowing Rio to race in Germany. Unfortunately we reached a point where, in the best interests of the team, we were forced to explore other options for the remainder of the season.
“We are very pleased to continue our support for Rio’s Formula 1 ambitions, by offering him a Reserve Driver role for the rest of the current season. We very much hope that he will accept that offer.”
We will shortly be announcing a new teammate for Pascal Wehrlein.

So it other words; his funding dried up so they terminated his contract; F1 is so f**ked up right now; it seems for the most part, the only way into F1 is through pay drives.

This is regardless of talent, if a driver has the $$$, they will get the drive regardless of whether they are a glass hammer or otherwise.

As I said, for the most part, STR is the exception to the rule, the top teams rarely bring in a rookie.

Looks like Haryanto did pay $7.5M but it wasn't enough so Manor cancelled the contract. Appears they kept the money and designated Haryanto as the reserve driver.
