I was expecting that new penalty to be applied. The 5 sec addition to the pitstop, but no, he escaped punishment again, and once again Hamilton was the resultant loser from his actions. I'm pretty damn certain there would have been penalties handed out had the positions of those two been reversed In the last two races.

The point is the INTENT. If you floor it OFFROAD and gain an advantage and don't give that advantage back (at least lift off a little which he didn't) you intended to gain an advantage outside track boundaries. And he simply got a warning.

That's a good point. Rosberg did himself no favors in doing that.

I still think giving him a 5 second penalty would have been too harsh. I definitely would not have wanted to be a race steward at that point in time. I thought the final warning was enough because if he had done it again, then he definitely would have been penalized.

What do you mean escaped from punishment again? I personally don't think hamilton would have received a penalty were the roles reversed. I think it was clear that it was a mistake and he didn't do it again. As a rosberg fan, I would have supported the decision to only issue a warning were the roles reversed because it was simply a mistake.

Going back to Spa when Lewis have back a place to Kimi according to the letter of the law, the rule was changed after the race because he was deemed to have got an advantage anyway despite the fact Kimi crashed out etc

So it's naive IMHO to believe there was nothing the stewards could do to even out Nicos gained advantage. He left the track, he gained an advantage

It's absolutely correct that there was no penalty because of who was involved as we have seen a different outcome for a different driver in a similar situation.

Yes the initial lock up sure was a mistake - But flooring the gas across the chicane? How the bejesus is that a mistake? Thats deliberate action.

Ok. Ive looked at the sporting regulations, and I may have to change my position:

20.2-
Drivers must use the track at all times. For the avoidance of doubt the white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.

A driver will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with the
track.

Should a car leave the track the driver may re-join, however, this may only be done when it is
safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage. At the absolute discretion of the race
director a driver may be given the opportunity to give back the whole of any advantage he
gained by leaving the track

So the key word is "lasting". Hamilton caught up again two laps later, so maybe it wasnt lasting. But you could say Rosberg gained an advantage by being in the cooler air, and not cooking his brakes, so it WAS lasting. But thats pushing it a bit.

So my position is now - it was underhand of Rosberg to floor it - but looking at the wording of the law, maybe he was ok.

yeah good point. I am naive about that cuz I didn't start watching f1 until 2010 so spa 2008 didn't even come to mind

So, turns out Chilton will get a three place grid penalty for Austria and Pérez will get a five place grid penalty, for their respective incidents.

I think the Chilton penalty a little harsh. 4th corner in a pack or cars and he loses the back end. It's not like he rammed anyone off deliberately or drove like a Maldonado.

I don't get how these two drivers even deserved penalties. So making a mistake is now an offence? Chilton lost his car, and got penalized....whatever happens around is collateral damage, it's goddamn RACING not a street with pedestrians on it.

And Perez and Massa, IMO both are to blame...if Button was okay slamming Hamilton into the wall last time I don't see why Perez is penalized when Massa put his car 1/2 inch away from Perez. You might expect cars to 'dance' a bit in the braking zones since they're....braking. For someone of Massa's experience he might want to take some notes on how to pass cars. And Perez already had braking issues and sh*t tyres which was televized numerous times on the radio, so obviously he's not going to be the most stable car going into the corner.

How about penalizing Massa for ruining FIs loss of a podium/points. Instead, Perez gets a 5 place penalty for struggling to brake into a corner and getting hit from the side.

Well, I think the decision to give the penalty is likely because Pérez didn't take the normal line. Instead of turning right to follow the kink, as drivers normally do, he just kept his wheel straight which Massa clearly wasn't expecting.

The onboard from Vettel's car was pretty scary, he was so lucky not to be collected by Massa through T1.

But a 5 second stop and go is at least 8X worse that what he gained in that move, he couldn't slow down and had to avoid flying into the wall of champions and red flagging the race, you can't give someone a massive penalty of 5 seconds for that.
