Perfect couple, an overweight businessman and an old chook :hehe:

So are Ferrari the only ones who wanted to keep the old engines? It says Merc would have THOUGHT about leaving if they old engines had stayed and Renault said they would leave if the old engines stayed. So is it just Ferrari that like them?

Cosworth would have stayed if they kept the V8's or a derivative of those. Mercedes pretty much state that F1 had to become more "production/family car" spec.

If cosworth had a team they'd stay, they even developed an engine for this year's regs.

So how exactly is it bad that F1 chose a future proof path that has kept the sport relevant for auto manufacturers where we see Honda returning instead of two major auto brands leaving if the V8s were kept?

As for Cosworth staying? I bet Ferrari fans would like a series where it was just Ferrari and Cosworth power...

It may well be that giving Mercedes absolutely everything they demanded, and turning F1 into a production car focused competition will future proof F1. 2 races into the series I would have said no - Bahrain changed my thinking. I want more of that!
And I want my team to bleeping get their act together and get up the front ASAP!

Correct me if Im wrong - as Ive skimmed read this, BUT.....

As far as I can see, the difference is.

A) Other teams threaten to leave, to get the sport changed to how they want it, trying to effectively hold the sport to ransom.
B) Mercedes make a statement, AFTER THE EVENT, that if things hand't changed, they would of struggled to justify the relevance in staying.

Those, to me, are two very different things.

Very good point LRW!

The regulation changes were the best chance Ferrari had at getting to the top step so yeah I see no issue with Merc threatening to quit. Besides the change was good as f1 was as boring as it was(endless Red Bull lockouts and the same driver winning for 9 straight races). Ferrari have been threatening to leave for a while now so it's no big deal in my view.

It's actually someone else talking about leaving F1 ....... this time :hehe:

This thread is laughable.

Mercedes has a business agenda in the sport. They're not coming in and investing millions to do a charity. If they want their actions in the sport to stay relevant to their core business (selling road cars), what's the harm in that?

BMW and Toyota left when they felt the sport isn't giving them the necessary ROI. What's the wrong in this? Everyone's got an agenda, let's not pretend they don't.

If Mercedes' terms weren't accepted and they say "very well, farewell", well then what's the argument here?

If Mercedes put forward the terms, and then the terms are agreed with and they stayed on and then made sh!t engines and a sh!t car....and then demanded the terms be changed, well then I call perennial losers.

If Ferrari for example found the V6 turbos to be a joke, and not relevant to their core business (whatever it is, I don't care) and left the sport...well good for them! I call that smart since they know what they want and stood by it.

When terms are agreed with and all teams work towards changes, and then when a couple of losers find out they aren't good enough and whine - THEN, we have some sore loser, whinging pompoms who have no frigging clue what they want or what they stand for.:)

I think this is crystal clear. Btw, I put forward my points with no names, and hypothetical situations and I hope it complies with forum regulations. :wavey:

If Mercedes and Renault had quit the sport it would have given Ferrari every thing they ever wanted,
A Ferrari formula so it was in their interest to oppose the new engine regs, then they wouldn't have had to threaten to leave again

that is until Mclaren & William's beat them with a Ferrari engines :hehe:

Well what we have now is a couple of strong manufacturers who have successfully pointed the sport in a better direction - relevance to the motor industry in general. Unfortunately for Ferrari, their products are highly specialized unlike the former two. Formula 1 used to be about speed and sound and high revving engines, but we live in a world of change - and change is taking us to the race for efficiency. Which is more relevant to the 95% of population (driving road cars) rather than the 5% (driving supercars, and most of them can't even do it well :hehe: )

Thankfully we have these guys in the sport now who can take the lead and show the rest how it's done. Personally, I miss the high revving sounds but if we get a strong leadership from a manufacturer which provides some serious technology and racing - BRING IT ON.

Edit;

Check out this link, the sound is either growing on me or they've done something to the exhaust?

I dont like this. Its like how multinationals can have power over countries by being in them. F1 teams now have power over the sport almost. What would happen, They can now almost bribe the FIA.

Of course Mercedes, like Ferrari and Renault will want to do what is best for their own business; they are companies, not a team of racers like the garagistes of old.

Do I like the "play by my rules or I'll take the ball home" mentality? NO! But it's a fact of life, businesses use questionable tactics daily to achieve their corporate agenda!

I've posted somewhere ...not sure where, so I'll post it again, something I saw on twitter. And it's that Bernie was moaning about the sound never having heard them live, only on the tv feed. And FOM hadn't adjusted the sound output to allow for the quieter engines. When Bernie heard them live he said...oh they're not too bad are they :banghead: maybe FOM have adjusted now so they sound better. Though Hammer you head them live didn't you...so maybe that's why they were better.
I prefer the sound of the old ones, love that primeval scream, but if we get racing like last week , I'll take these ones!
