Didn't Ron inject himself in the Lewis contract negotiations early on?

I heard he's running things in the Lotus garage now.

I believe Ron commented on the negotiations . Along the lines of ' we could have kept Hamilton if we'd wanted to.' It all seemed a little save facey and after the eventee. It was all the stuff that led up to Hamilton leaving I was on about, the cringey stuff that went on for years. I don't think Ron was in a position to do anything about that because Whitmarsh was trying to take all the power. Horrible position for Ron to be in after he built up that company. But he's righted it now. He has the power back. So we'll see what he really wants. He's already hinted at Lewis coming back.

The thing is that Ron was removed from executive board membership at the height of his barney with the Bharainis when it looked like the MP4-12c coupe was a sales flop (later saved by the spyder and ofcourse the P1) And the lame TP at that point could easily have gone raised some leveraged debt and, with the goodwill of the Bharaini majority owners muscled into some voting shares and install himeself permanently (ofcourse he didnt have the gumption) and Ron would have had zero power over the actions the chief exec made. All he would have been was an 'advisor' non exec founder to be wheeled out for some PR talk, basically a tiger without claws, so he would have had no choice but to act in the boards best interests as he couldnt afford to piss them off further into thinking he had become a potential 'bad leaver'
So all he could do was play hardball with Lewis to save money etc etc - he was in absolutely no position to do what he wanted, only to keep the Bharainis and their advisors onside which he obviously did because once Lewis left and the team collapsed and his once best pal and now enemy Mansour went to hospital he was back in and the lame TP had run out of time, sponsors and support
And then there were suggestions that it was the Bharainis who decided to underwrite the increased payment to Lewis to get him to stay once he decided to leave with Ron bad flying out somewhere to badmouth him with Merc - so who knows what went on exactly, but for sure Lewis leaving was a massive catalyst and ultimately finished off the lame TP and maybe helped Ron back in even

To cut a long story short, Ron did what Ron does, played hardball and was probably the icing on the cake for Lewis to leave = but he had no choice and I am sure in time Lewis will know this, although Rons history of relationship breakups with his former protegees makes it a 50/50

I am sure Lewis will come back in time

After the event being the key point you raise then.
The positive for McLaren fans is they have the leader they want back in charge.
It would be so cool to have this thread full of optimism about McLaren's future and a tad less harping on and on repeating exactly the same points about the past :)

Do the rules say something about harping on

If we have just read for the first time about a sponsors decision, do the rules say we cant repeat specific points for emphasis?

just a bit confused here about exactly which part of free speech is not free

For example harping on about F1 restrictions and lower speeds and unlimited testing and spending must be ok surely?

No. 'After the event', wasn't the key point I raised, that was answering your point about Ron being involved in the Lewis contract . My key point was why did Whitmarsh sacrifice his career in the way he did when the writing was on the wall for all to see? I think about that a lot. I did end my comment on a positive , I said at least now Mclarem ( and Lewis ) can move on to greater things. I count myself as McLaren fan and have been in Despair about what was happening. Lewis takes first place in my support and affections as everybody knows, but I supported McLaren long before Lewis came into F1( whilst supporting Lewis in lower categories) I am delighted that Whitmarsh is out of McLaren as I'm sure other fans are, and now a true leader is back. And that's fantastic. They have an exciting new driver and the Honda partnership to look forward to. But surely we can muse on their recent history?? Or would those things be better in another thread do you think?

“We were interested in being with McLaren still because we have a bank in England, but it was a small sponsorship.
“When [Lewis] Hamilton was there it was justified. [Jenson] Button is a great driver, but it’s another matter,” -Santander

I'm starting to feel like cookin' here about my insistence that Hamilton brought additional interest to McLaren's sponsors and it's a factor in why they didn't get a title sponsor for this season. It's easy to argue with me, it's a little harder to argue with the reasoning of an F1 sponsor.

I've seen you post that quote on a certain Facebook group, WB, and literally get ripped apart for it. :D

They dont. They are another bunch of opinion filled armchair supporters with not a civil bone in their body.

I suspect a lot of them are members here.... ;)

Simply pointing out the obvious Lew, not worth getting into an argument over there. Some people have their head in the sand and will always respond the same way. Notice they didn't actually address the statement did they? The same people that spent the entirety of last year saying there was nothing wrong at McLaren... Go figure.

A certain ex McLaren driver winning the WDC is going to make heads explode in that group isn't it? Not a single post there on this last race Sunday wonder why? :hehe:
