Regarding double points, other series do similar and it does work; British Super Bikes for example even out the top 5's points in the last 3 races or so then do some jiggery for fastest laps etc.

FIA, check.
Bernie, check.
Teams, ch- oh, hang on, they're not taking any flak for this?

You make a very good point Denthúl.

I am sure most of these new rules are announced for litigation purposes. Something my ex wife solicitor knew how to do very well.

"We want the whole house"
"No"
"Fine we will compromise, half the house!"

• Cost cap - We have heard many times about doing this. This time round the principle has been agreed? ok, and a date has been set? ok, and a committee is going to sit down and work out how to make it happen? yeah whatever, same o, same o

• Driver numbers - Sounds good, but hold on, so a driver has spent time and effort building up his brand around his number, then he wins the WDC and when his brand needs that number to be seen most, er hold on, its now a number 1, ok

• New penalties - 5 sec penalty, so it means if your car is miles better than the rest, you have a licence to break rules because you can pull a gap of 30 secs at will in a few laps anyway

• Double points for the last race - seems a bit cartoonish, why not have double points for certain circuits, like historic Monza and Silverstone, hell why not go the whole way and have double points for historic teams

I actually think it would be better to reintroduce the total points for the season based on your best 90% races. This will allow the engine blowups coming to have slightly less effect. effectively everyone gets a free blowup or two :hehe:

I imagine they won't get any at all and it will all be aimed at the first two. It's not particularly surprising.

Interesting point, Denthúl!!

Here's my dumb question of the day: Do the teams "really" have any say in how the rules get changed?

Yes.

Err, well. Some of them. There are representatives from six teams (Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Mercedes, Williams and Lotus (currently - this could change if one of the other four teams finishes higher in the championship next year)) in the Strategy Group, as well as a representative each from the FIA and CVC (both of which have six votes).

To add to that there were proposed changes that the Teams DID reject, namely:

• Forced two pit-stops per race
• Raising the car+driver minimum weight to help taller drivers.

I'm glad that they said no to the mandatory stops, but not raising the minimum weight is kind of ridiculous.

Im guessing that they did it, because the teams voted have got a grasp on the weight, and want to put the others who may be struggling at a disadvantage...?

They would just find smaller drivers so they could increase the weight of the car.

@cookin the number 1 when wining the championship is at the driver's discretion. They can keep their can number.

But would it not become a status thing? I cant see many drivers not wanting the number 1, probably in conflict with what their agent or sponsor would want. Surely if they were serious about they would just retire the number 1. At least there is a choice, but doesnt sound too well thought out to me

Yep, it's a stupid unenforceable rule that will only punish the lower teams who aren't a massive business to syphon money off to and claim it's not for F1.

• Driver numbers - Sounds good, but hold on, so a driver has spent time and effort building up his brand around his number, then he wins the WDC and when his brand needs that number to be seen most, er hold on, its now a number 1, ok

They don't have to take the Number 1 if they win.

Well it's the FIA, so they'll end up with double points for Ferrari at all races. And every win Ferrari get, their nearest competitor looses 5 points.

I hope Vettel gets the number 5, because in Roman numerals it's V for Vettel, and also was famously associated with one of his heroes - Nigel Mansell.
