Thanks, Spanky!!

Basically, all teams need to find the optimum "middle ground" between the two?
Mind, if I had to choose, I'd be focussing on the race, rather than a lap, no?

Yep, it certainly makes Q less important than it has been. Also, with the single set of gear ratios, teams would be smart to spread their powerband. So, sacrificing some peak power to get a great spread to cover your inability to change gear ratios will also mean less peak performance.

F1 is being driven slower and away from leading edge technology as it strives to become more production car like and cheap.

Do you think there is a concern that the speeds were running away from the drivers?? (Pardon the pun!! :P )

The cars are slower now than they were ten years ago.

I haven't been following F1 that long, so I had no idea!
BUT, I do know they go reallllly fast today, so if they
went faster 10 years ago... WoW!! :yikes:

I think di Montezemolo needs to take some PR courses or just shut his mouth, altogether!!

Hey, Spanky? Doesn't that guy with the beard in the video remind you of Alonso?
D'ya think it's him, under all that hair??

A great interview with Mike Evans, project leader at Shell for F1 fuels. Well worth listening to. As well as revealing the engine unveiling date, he also confirms that the 2014 engine will have equal power to this years engines for 33 seconds per lap and for the rest of the lap they will be about 30hp less than a current GP2 engine.

My "translation" of that article:

The first Ferrari engine of the new turbo era is called the 059/3 (*but, it's not the one pictured).
They unveiled it today: but, not "in the flesh", rather in a 3D animation. The sound, however,
is the real thing.
"Once it is out of the showroom, which is rather anechoic, the sound will be fuller," explained
Luca Marmorini, director of engines at Maranello.

The 056 was the last V8 internal combustion engine used in races. The 057 was the prototype
of an engine that was later blocked when engine development was frozen by rules in 2007.
The 058 was a 4-cylinder version which the FIA initially wanted.

The new engine seems more "real" than the prefigurations demonstrated by Mercedes and
Renault. Note the turbo engine is at the rear end, the KERS systems is attached to the
transmission on the left side, the large unique battery is at the front.

James Allison, technical director, believes there are not many grey areas in the new rules:
"As far as I'm concerned, they are clear enough; however, it is also clear that with such new
rules, everyone is going to work to find the limits". Marmorini suggests that one area that
can further be developed may be the second electric motor, which is attached to the turbo
engine, which does not have a fixed power: "The teams will choose whether to use it to
recover more engery or to power the engine".
