It's as if Mad Max either can't see or - more probable - he doesn't like simple solutions to problems and goes on stupid awkard long-winded "adventures".
That's why we have cars that don't overtake as well when close together. A simple solution to the problem Mad Max wanted to fix back in 1997 - slowing the cars down - could easily have been solved with cars being forced to be "fatter", ie. more draggy designs so they look more 80's ish. That would knock a few seconds off and actually encourage even more overtaking, but instead he decided on thinner cars and grooved tyres...
