The best thing that could happen to F1 as a sport would be for Ferrari to leave it.

(whether that would be the best thing for F1 as a business is another matter...)

Ferrari leaving F1 would be a bad thing sport and business wise. Sure they are in bed with the FIA and manipulate events to suit their needs but the bottom line is they built a superior car between 00 - 04. Even without the FIA it would have been hard to imagine anyone but Ferrari winning as all the other teams were not at their level. I didn't hear this kind of whining from Mclaren fans when Mclaren won four titles in a row.

Umm... but Ferrari’s dominance has started after FIA banned that material, was it Beryllium or something like that? – because it was supposed to be carcinogen (though I think it was related to it’s production technology rather than it’s appliance in F1 engines).

Now… if I remember well, Ferrari was linked to that decision (as in using it’s influence to enforce such ban), and if that is true, we can argue that without such move Ferrari would not be so dominant and those years could have been more fun.

people compare McLarens 80s dominance where you had like McLarenFan has said earlier Prost Vs Lauda Senna Vs Prost even when the car was a cut above the rest you would still be entertained by the inter team battle. Compared to Schumachers years where he had team mates pull over for him added to the fact his team mates were while good drivers would never had what it took to be world champion.
As a fan you want to see a fight

Comes to me, it would. Of course I like my team winning, but I like them winning after a good fight. If I have to choose between winning without being challenged at all, or having great fight and not winning, I prefer second one; that is why I see last year as one of the best in F1 recently, even with the outcome.

There you go. I mean, MS won almost all races in... what year was that? Not that it matters; year was completely wasted as, after a couple of races, it was already obvious how whole championship would end. Where was fun in that..? I prefer cliffhangers...

I've noticed a pattern here, it's normally the British fans that say certain years were the best in the sport, normally when a British Driver or Team were doing well, the boring years are, surprise surprise when Ferrari were doing well.

It's only natural, After Webber and Kimi were out of the Australian race I was watching with only half interest.

I will agree, even for a Schumacher fan the 2000-2004 period was less interesting because nobody took the fight to him, however there was always that feeling in the back of your mind you were watching a once in a lifetime marriage of Team and Driver harmony, so it was far from boring...

I guess Ferrari fans will always enjoy when Ferrari cross the line first. Looking at it from your POV deMure the relationship that schumi built with the team was incredible and i appreciate that i was alive to see a probably perfect combination of team and driver but that still doesn't take away from the fact the on track action was as stale as old bread. I think i would have enjoyed having rabies a lot more!

I think F1 does need Ferrari, infact it needs teams like McLaren and Williams just as much. Infact it also misses some of the dead teams like Brabham, Lotus and Tyrrell, they were teams who used to constantly take the fight to Ferrari before McLaren and Williams even arrived on the scene.

The team that was Tyrrell lives on a least.
