And the traditional KERS brake harnessing is still in effect... I think 2014 will be a year of attrition and reliability is probably going to be a little more important than power.

Restricting the exhaust with the 2nd turbine would loose a lot of power. Unless it is only routed through the 2nd turbine when boost pressure is released, or on overrun

I cant believe there is a second seperate turbine with the single 6 cyl fed outlet. The excess heat from the turbine charging the compressor and then inflow is what the MGU directs into the battery. The heat energy reclaimed is different from the flow for the turbo hence the (vaguely green) aspect. So the harvesting is constant when boost is induced and is stored ready to deploy

but i could be wrong, the article sounds like its a separate optional turbine

Yeah looks like a single 'pressure charging system' that feeds the battery via mgu but isnt clear if its separate to the gas flow 'primary' turbine or integrated

this pressure charging system, if it was separate would only work on overboost, so not all the time

We'll have to wait and see; in reality there will probably be very little difference between powerplants from 2014 onwards, I am willing to bet that it'll be less that 2% performance difference!

Anyway, back on topic, JB for WDC in 2014

There will always been some benefits here and there with available torque and their corresponding curves which will lead to better driveability. However I'm thinking that even the 2% difference you state will be too much, I'm confident all of the team will have the peak horse power figure buttoned up super tight < .5%. There will be differences maximizing fuel efficiency but the big differentiator is going to be reliability. In my opinion he who gets that right will win the year.

Just a rumour, but..........

I would not believe that! it's a 750 Bhp max so I'd be floored if any team didn't hit the max horsepower number but trailed in the other aspects of the engine's driveability.

Its not a given because of the fuel flow restrictions plus the need to make an engine last more races. Compared to the current V8, the V6 without the turbo and heat recovery would probably be drastically reduced output just to get started

It makes sense that there could be such a variance due to the apparent flexibility in how to go about harvesting heat as well as exhaust and using them to help with lag or not etc

I wonder how long Merc would have the advantage for and if the engines would be homologated downwards if the others cant catch up

If Mercedes really are that advanced then I wonder if there is any thoughts in Vettel's mind about jumping to Merc. The reason I say that is it would be an awesome opportunity to become the first German to win a WDC driving a German car. Alonso goes to RB, Vettel goes to Merc and Lewis goes to Ferrari - that would be interesting.

Or rosberg to ferrari

I'd prefer Lewis - and I'm sure that will carry enormous weight over at Maranello :hehe:

Power means very little as proven by Red Bull, the Renault engine is believed to be down on power compared to Mercedes and Ferrari, yet Red Bull have still managed to claim three drivers and three constructors titles in a row, aero and chassis are far more important that outright power and I can't believe that Mercedes will have 100bhp more than the other manufacturers.

There's a massive detenuation (is that even a word?) of aero performance for next year. Smaller wings, no blown nothing diffuser, and a single exhaust out that's behind the car. Engine and mechanical grip will consequently become more important.
