Good post Hammer... I had never seen the pit lane traffic spotter. I too thought the Lollipop man was responsible for watching down the pitlane.

I would like to see one of those wire cameras down the length of the pitlane, and maybe a few robotic cameras. Then we can get a good view of what is happening all over the place.

yeah, that should be fairly doable. wonder why they haven't done it yet...

Because the guy in your avatar is very cheap?

Idunno, it seems like it would be cheaper than employing multiple cameramen/women.

You seem to be assuming they are professional qualified cameramen (which of course most of us would). From what I've heard this isn't always the case.

You learn something new everyday....I always thought the guy with the lollipop was also the pitlane traffic spotter.

I thought it was the lollipop man too. how on earth can there be so many unsafe releases when one mans sole job is to see if a car is coming

Some teams in their relentless search for additional revenue, hold internet contests where you can win a job as a pit crew for a GP weekend. the entry fee is $100,000. Kind of like the people that pay $20 million Dollars to be a "cosmonaut" on a Russian mission.

I always thought it was a pretty tough job to be the lollipop man and the pitlane traffic spotter at the same time...I mean you need to see if the car is done with, AND look out for traffic at the same time, you waste too much time with that. But yeah, if one guy is just looking out for traffic, one wonders why there are still so many f**kups with unsafe releases.

It seems teams will receive a ten place grid drop for fitting a wheel that then comes off, that seems grossly unfair to me on the driver!
#367007
Ridiculous. The driver gets penalized again for something completely out of his control....FIA are a bunch of retarded mutts.

So what do you guys think would be a reasonable penalty, and one that will make teams act that little bit more careful? A fine on the teams already happens, so $$$ obviously doesn't matter? Points deduction from the WCC? That might work I suppose?

Problem is, teams are striving to do a sub 2sec stop. With that sort of pressure on teams, no matter what the penalty, human error will still occur. I think a minimum pit-stop time would be a good way to go forward - say 5sec. That way they have plenty of time. But again, human error could still occur - but I believe it would be much less frequent.

There have been a lot of these loose tyres over the last few years (more so than I remember ever happening before?), and something does need to be done.

EDIT: Oh it seems they have discussed minimum pit-stop time and the teams rejected it.

They should only give grid penalties out if a particular team releases a car without it's tyres fully fitted multiple times during a season,e.g 3,or even 5,or whatever, something like that, they get a 10 place drop

It's harsh to give a penalty out,for just 1 mistake,I know it's dangerous but like 10 place drop is harsh for just 1 error, people make mistakes

So 5 loose wheels and 5 potential injured crew before a penalty? I don't think that would prevent anything.

It's a team sport and the driver is part of the team; they suffer when the driver does something out of their control, so it's not really unfair.

You've got a good point. Its hard to argue with.

I think if it's something the team does they should deduct constructors points, if its something the driver does then the driver gets the penalty.
Regarding the safety aspect I agree with LRW, make a minimum stop time for wheel changes.
