No doubt that McLaren have all the technical expertise to rival any team, and a depth of talent.
During all their successful periods, there was period of refinement of design year on year. The John Barnard, Gordon Murray, and Adrian Newey eras, all had continuity of concept.
Since 2009, McLaren have always started the season pretty average, and made monumental gains in season, to finish with arguably one of the quickest cars. The next season, they launch a car with a new "design concept", and start from zero again, without building on the last seasons success. Quite often its been aero led problems. As we've seen this year, McLaren can only go quick with the car on the deck, which isn't possible with 160 kg of fuel.
I honestly think Lewis got tired of taking a step backwards at the start of every season after finishing the previous year up front. Mercedes have shown refinement of concept, which is paying dividends, although the fundamental tyres problems of the last 2 cars is still there also...
New chassis are signed of in August of September, so obviously there is never a straight flow on of ideas, but Renault (now Lotus Renault) for many years have had 2 design teams that alternate year on year, but work to integrate each new design with the concept and best parts of the previous design.
Red Bull in recent times have shown how familiarity and refinement of a long term design concept can reap rewards. Ferrari were at their best when they did the same, its not rocket science.....
