It had been one of the highlights this week, government wanted to build a mall inside of the Taksim Parkı,which looks like this:

Lots of people, including me,were against this, some people gathered inside the park and stayed at tents at night, didn't do anything vulgar. All of a sudden, yesterday at 5 AM this happened, riot starts at 3:00 min

They began the building work after this but today people gathered again and here the news are:

And take a look at how the police treated people who want to protect the park:

I just wanted to share this with an international site I'm following, how I am disappointed with this and how restricted people are,it's not happening only here but this was a day that will be recorded in Turkey's history. If anyone has any opinion I'd like to hear

I've just been reading about that Elfinitty. I was wondering if It was a park I went to last time I went to Istanbul? A marvellous park, but echoed so much of times gone by. I loved it and wanted to find out all about it's history.
I think it's a different park. I think the one I'm thinking of is Yildiz park? Near Ortakoy, near the Sultans palace on the Bosphorous. I went back in time when I walked through that park! I hope they don't develop the park at Taksim.

The one that you're talking about is Yildiz Parki I guess.Youre right, this is a beautiful place and now what makes me frustrated and shocked is how police treated people, this is an attack to humanity! Our primary minister was criticizing Egypt 2 years ago that they were attacking their own people but what's happening here now?I can't even find words for this.Ive come up to more and more horrible videos!Hope all these will come to an end soon.

I hope so too Elfinitty. It doesn't sound good. :(

It has some historical importance but what made people mad was a green area becoming into a building. The riot still grows bigger,I don't live near Taksim but here there was a big protesting at 3 am luckily nobody got hurt, but in Taksim I can't say so it's still happening

So it's the environmental aspect? I don't think I've ever heard of violent protests over a green space.

Is this park important or historically significant?

Well I would guess it is important to people, otherwise they wouldn't be protesting it.....?

Surely not(?!)

It's important to people of Istanbul because it is one if the rare green places in that area, also it is reported that in an earthquake this place is the shelter for that area.
Another thing is that the primary minister gives places like that to the businessmen that is close to him,in the place I live there is a huge and ugly building and other ones that is built by a company that has an owner close to the primary minister.Lots of buildings in central Istanbul,so people needs some green space.
But other than that,he's been doing some stuff people doesn't like,I'm talking about politics, there wasn't much rebel against them but now everything caused this big protest,I think.
What is unacceptable is that a government applying violence against their own people, and these people didn't do anything violent the police started it first, the people has no weapon or stuff.

@wb:Youre right about it and i haven't heard about these rumors

I might be wrong with what I am going to say, Elfinitty , correct me if I am, but I wonder if there is more to these protests than just the building on the park site? Turkey has been a secular state for almost 100years when Attaturk had it wrritten into the constitution of the country, and it is unde that regime that people have grown up and been educated in Turkey.
I sense....and this is where I may be wrong, a slight shift with this curren leader toward a more Islamic style country? I remember hearing some time ago that this leaders wife had decided to cover her head in public. Just last week I read that alcohol would not be sold after 10 pm. I'm not sure if that means in shops only or also in bars, clubs and restaurants. If its a case of the latter this will devastate the tourist industry along the west and south coast, and all the businesses associate with it. I love Turkey and all the Turkish people Ive met on my many visits. I'd do hope things work out ok for Turkey.

You're right rc,this country is founded by Atatürk as a secular one and this government wants it to turn into an Islamic one.The alcohol restrict is true,i dont even want to talk about how he explained this restrict,it disgusted me.But i havent thought about the touristic side,i dont know about that.
Not only this but also that if someone, especially journalists, says something against them they get sued somehow its said they did sth against the favor of this country. You know what I mean?Less freedom of speech. Also the military suffered too,so all these stuff gathered and made people protest.
And I'm glad to see that you enjoyed your times here, thanks for your wishes,I'm hoping the same too.
