Bernie wants to increase overtaking by removing the present point system for drivers and instead crowning the driver who WINS the most races the champion!
What do you think?
I like it! Racing is about winning, not finishing second consistently.
Constructors Championship would remain the same as present.
This would force teams to decide whether they wanted their drivers to push hard for wins and possibly crash in the process or be more conservative to insure maximum Constructors points.
Would the tifosi root for Ferrari or would they root for the Ferrari pilots?

Don’t like it.

I think what they have to do is give winner more points… say, 12-8-6-4-3-2-1.

That way, even if driver has DNF in one race, he’ll theoretically need only 2 races – not 5 – to recover. That will make fear of DNF lesser. And having more than 2 points between 1st and 2nd should stimulate drivers to fight for winning, whenever they can achieve it. If they can’t, they’ll at least be motivated to fight for rest of the points available for taking, knowing that sum of all their results will count at the end.

This makes far more sense, nikon. although I do sort of see where Ecclestone is coming from. Montezemolo made a similar point about the points/wins problem last year when Massa had won two races, and Hamilton none, and yet Hamilton was still leading the drivers' championship. Having said that, I don't think I want to see the points system messed around with.

I think we have to remember why this system was introduced. Firstly it was because Schumacher and Ferrari were dominating the championship, and secondly because much-improved reliability throughout the field meant the teams in the middle of the pack had few opportunities to score points under the 10-6-4-3-2-1 system. So the current system rewards consistently good results and above all rewards reliability. A winner-takes-all system would make team orders all the more attractive to certain teams (you know who I'm talking about) and would in all probability make the narrative of most championships less interesting. I like the system we've got.
