She's dead.
I'm very much against conservative/right-wing politics, but I wouldn't wish death on anyone, and she was a staunch woman who fought for what she believed in.
RIP
Rot in Hell more like - if she doesn't privatise it when she gets there. I would never normally be happy when it is announced that somebody has died, whether I liked them or not. This is the exception.
The deliberate destruction of British manufacturing industry, the wilful devastation of mining communities, the cancelling of London elections and sale of County Hall, the savage attack on workplace rights and civil rights, the obscene suggestion that unemployment was a price worth paying, the institutional hate crime of Clause 26, the gross incompetence that led to Black Wednesday, the even grosser incompetence that led to the Falklands War (for which John Nott was foolish enough to carry the can, when it was a Cabinet decision and thus on Thatcher's watch)...oh, and the Poll Tax.
She took away the free school milk that kids used to get in primary schools at the time.
That is just ONE reason - BUT along with all her policies of only looking after the rich, making life very hard for the poor, she introduced GREED into daily life in the UK and boy o boy are we seeing what its led to now.
To this day some communities have never recovered and many now have problems with 3rd generation unemployment along with a long list of social problems such as poor schooling, anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse, high teenage pregnancy and so on.
She did not wish for people to have employment rights and wished to return to a Victorian (Dickensian) status whereby the exploitation of people became the norm once again. Remember her vitriolic opposition to the minimum wage? The UK is the easiest country in the world among the developed ones to buy and sell and that is thanks to her policies, we are foreign owned to a great extent thanks to her. She was a lamentable premier and her legacy should be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Contrary to popular belief there was greater economic growth in the 60/70s than during the 80/90s, 3.6% to 1.9%.
A nation can only earn money for investment and to pay the bills if you export goods and since the 80s we have been doing that less and less. We have been in deficit since 1986. In 2007 we exported £27 billion worth of services, we had a deficit of £68 billion in manufacturing goods.
What has fueled the apparent prosperity since her day is the fact that property prices were rising and we have borrowed money against it, It was not paid for in increased productivity, which has fallen since the 70s. She has set the stage for us to become a 3rd rate country....
She introduced monetarism to the UK. This policy deregulated the banking sector which sowed the seeds of this recent financial crisis. This meant that London and the south east had lots of investment placed into it while areas like the north and south west were neglected. As a result London and the surrounding areas became richer while the rest of the UK suffered.
Under her government spending changed in the following areas
Social security spending up by 31.8% due to the amount of people put out of work due to her policies
Trade and industry spending went down by 38.2% as a result of her monetarist policies. Housing spending went down by 67% which meant there was less council housing for people that needed it.She sold off lots and lots of council housing.
Employment and training spending went up by 33.3% as a result of the amount of people out of work.
Margaret Thatcher - utter scum.
