According to Whitmarsh they could have kept Lewis but chose not to. Go figure. Corporate interests I guess... it's like BP saying they're conscientious about environmental safety.
So now the only reason Lewis left Mclaren is because of Button.
I think Lewis left Mclaren because Lewis wanted to leave McLaren. There's been a lot of great drivers over the years that have done the same, so nothing that Lewis did is that out of the ordinary.
I do think however that if he'd been in a WDC battle in Brazil along with Vettel and Alonso, he would have stayed.
According to Whitmarsh, Lewis signed for Merc the day after the Singapore GP. His comment about that was "It's never a good thing to make your decision after a bad race"....I mean wtf Whitmarsh, Hamilton had his PICK of bad races to choose from get a freaking clue!!
