Yeah, the downshift caused him to spin and hit Hamilton. He held the line the best way he could. It is a racing incident, the one I felt bad about, but that's racing...

I thought that the Hulkenberg penalty was harsh; yes it took out Lewis Hamilton but it was under tricky conditions; these sort of rulings will stifle racing as drivers will think twice about making an overtaking attempt for fear of being penalised. I thought it was double standards as well; I feel that if Hulkenberg was penalised, Vettel should have been penalised as well as he did chop across the front of Senna taking the Brazilian out of the race, but alas that was conveniently ignored; another case of "the only thing consistent about FIA stewardship is inconsistency".

To be honest, both cases were clear racing incidents. Nothing there was done on purpose. But, I guess you're right, they keep being inconsistent...

The way the stewarding of the races is these days there is no such thing as a racing incident. There seems to always have to be fault. It's totally moronic! :banghead:

I agree with this, Hulkenburg made an error while on the wet line on slicks with 2 mobile chicanes right in front, I think a penalty was very harsh. Was just a case of wrong place, wrong time for Hamilton.

This is the point; I wasn't pointing out that Vettel did anything wrong, just that neither did Hulkenberg, racing incidents all round, inconsistent and interfering stewardship in my view!

I agree it was harsh. Made harsher still by the fact that Vettel didn't get dinged for his even though they were of similar composition. I think the think the Hulk got dinged more because it took the leader out of the picture. He stuck his nose and tried to make a pass while carrying way too much speed and Hamilton paid the price. By definition it was avoidable contact, but given the circumstances I'm sure loosing out on a potential win for Force India or a very probable podium finish, that he''' be hating himself for the chicken up all winter long.

Hulkenburg will have plenty other opportunities in the future if he drives like that more often. It was a racing accident and nothing more. A penalty implies malice and it's pretty clear he wasn't trying to take anyone out. The guy made a mistake whilst on a wet track on slicks. He had a chance and would have been stupid not to take it.

The Vettel/Senna incident was also a racing incident and nothing more. Senna went for a gap that wasn't really there and Vettel took, if anything, a slightly wider line as I think he would have missed the apex even if Senna hadn't clouted him.

It shouldn't matter who was taken out of the race, both were avoidable accidents...

It's a bit like saying that murdering a wealthy businessman should carry a harsher sentence than murdering a homeless man!

I don't agree with that view; there was clearly a gap; Senna was half way up the side of Vettel when the German turned in, it was a racing incident but it was 100% Vettel's fault!

Doesn't look like Vettel cut across. If anything he was wide of the corner and Senna was going steaming in and would have been lucky to make the corner if he didn't use Vettel as a brake! I'd call it a racing incident given the track conditions and that it was on lap 1 when the field is still bunched up, but if there was any blame I'd put the majority with Senna.

We be as well just agree to disagree and let it lie there. The season is over and Vettel is champion. No harm done in the end. :)

Senna would have made the corner easily to be fair, you can see that just before the accident he was travelling at the same speed as other cars.

Vettel's c0ck up, but the planets were indeed aligned for him that day my friends. Legends have to start somewhere.

and no Andrew, penalties don't require malice some times it's just incompetence or a mistake.

You miss what I'm meaning. An honest mistake, which this was, should never require such a severe penalty as far as I am concerned.

How about that move between Kimi and msc??
That was close!!
