How about just not penalizing the driver at all (since he didn't break it) and charge the team 50000 euros/5 WCC points? Problem solved.

Did anyone else find the race sort of meh? I just couldn't get interested in the event at any point throught out the weekend. I mean I only watched the final 10 minutes of qualifying and then switched off immediately. I had the race on yesterday but after the first corner I only half watched it. How odd.

What a pity...since it was one of the best races which featured so many overtaking manouvres up and down the field.

You would think Massa qualifying ahead of Alonso could be used to help Alonso. They did it with Irvine. But what do I know?

Other teams would not do the same, because first of all: the opportunity to have such a big difference on start sides are slim to none. Second, the possibilities of being in such a position where 5 places drop for one driver clearly works in their favour... is also slim to none. 5 places is a big penalty.

Slim to none? it happened, the chances are not none.

Who's to say some team in the future might not see a way to either improve their own position or put someone else at a disadvantage with similar actions? I just don't think the rules should allow a team to have the option of shuffling the grid.

I didnt think it was worth it (as I thought a strong Massa up front would have been better for Fernando), but when I saw Alonso in P4 by turn 1, i realized why they run teams and i post on forums.

I mean the opportunity of such conditions happening AGAIN for other teams to use.
1. New circuit, massive difference in grip. How many times ever before has the bad side lost that many positions in a start? What are the odds of this happening again?
2. Both team drivers on the bad side, lead driver behind but within reach of the penalty (ie Mclaren couldnt have done it with Lewis or Button for example as they were too far apart)
3. A cooperating 2nd driver.... face it, VERY few drivers would have put up with that. And it would have definitely not happened had Massa been P2 or in a position to hassle the competing driver (vettel). Would Ferrari had done if Massa was on the good side?

When you factor the possibility of something like this ocurring again..... I say slim to none.

How about this: think of any scenario, in any other race where something like this would have made sense. Remember, Ferrari did it only because it made sense to them. I'm very bad with trivia and i have been watching F1 for so long its all a big blur... so i dont know anytime when something like this could have happened (regardless of the gearbox rule being new)....

My guess is, the FIA will just let this be.

I think that over time this will be remembered as the race in which Lewis beat the Red Bulls in a worse car

If enough people keep repeating such fairy tales...
They were equal at best. Button certainly had better pace than Webber.

Yup. Odd.
I was very excited with this race. In fact, i was out working and watched it streamed on my phone. Wouldnt have missed itbfor the world. The race itself was great, and the fact the US got treated with such a great race (even consodering the great expectations) is good for the sport. F1 needs usa more than usa needs F1. So this success is nuthin' but good.

I still can't say for if i'll go to Texas or Montreal next yr though. It was a great atmosphere..... But Montreal beats Texas in general awesomeness, even if this COTA is the kind of track i like.

The last 10 laps when Hamilton controlling Vettel was a bit meh but the rest of the race was fantastic!

Massa and Button charging through the field, the suspense of waiting to see IF Hamilton would pass Vettel, the midfield battles racing hard. It was a great race, although it would have been better if Webber hadn't retired as it was starting to look like he and Alonso would have a titanic fight for 3rd place. After Webber retired it was an easy 3rd for Alonso, he didnt have the pace to catch Hamilton and Vettel.

Fastest in every practice session + Quali + fastest lap in the race

The redbull was faster deal with it

Practice doesn't say anything, qualifying is Red Bull's priority, McLaren had much better race pace, which was also clear on friday, with full tanks. You deal with that.

I posted before the race but after Q that I felt the advantage RB had in Q would not be present in the race. The RB has their DDRS working very well which pays off big time in Q but has very limited value during the race.

IMO the McLaren was the fastest car on the circuit during the race.

and that's the big worry for the scuderia this coming weekend, Alonso was 30+ seconds behind that's a lot of pace to make up.
