Likewise I'm not attacking civil servants, I'm not attacking politicians, I'm stating that there's a difference between sending the nameless and the faceless off to war, than it is to fight it yourself.

An example of two of the more hawkish presidents/candidates we've had of late in the US; George "W" Bush spent his Vietnam era serving in the national guard, defending Texas from being attacked. Mitt Romney had his Vietnam era war requirement deferred four times by his family (during that time he was actively protesting against the anti war protestors) until it was no longer necessary for him to serve because Vietnam wound down.

Do you see a connection? I contend that losing a loved one in any war, let alone a manufactured and unnecessary war is likely to turn a hawk into a dove.

I have great respect for your opinion, Zurich Allen but on this occasion, I simply can not agree, if politicians had to fight the wars they start, there would be no war, it's easy to send other men and women to fight commercial and political wars, usually American led wars in recent times, often against public opinion. When you look at recent wars, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, these are self serving wars all about oil under the guise of liberation. If western governments are so concerned about making this a truly free World, why don't they go in and help war torn African countries?

I do however agree that war happens, especially in middle east/African nations, that's the way it has been for thousands of years as you pointed out; but western governments plod into what is part of the culture in these countries, interfering in civil wars. At the end of the day, it all comes down to oil for western countries. I'm not attacking civil servants; those people do a good job in general, it's the people at the top that I take issue with, sending our troops to fight in foreign wars against the will of the people they represent!

Afghanistan has oil?

Do they not? I thought that they did; maybe I am wrong about that; I know for sure that Iraq and Libya certainly does!

Could we just have a thread where we pay respect to those that lost their life to defend our future freedom, without an argument on the semantics of war?

Should Politician fight in wars? No.

Politicians fight battles in other arenas. It it comes to armed conflict then the troops need to believe that they are the final solution when all other options have failed. Politicians should then not want to avoid going to war because they are scared, if it is the right and just battle.

Every Service* man and women around the world no matter what uniform they wear are there because they want to be**. We all signed up knowing the price that we could pay for peace, our country, our deity, our honor, or what ever makes us want to do it. In return we ask of a bit of respect for our fallen friends, and kin.

*Notice I use the word service, a pet peeve of mine is the term soldier to encompass all the armed forces, some people might be amazed, that Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, Marines and many other forces are in the military.

**Conscripts not included
