a couple of my mates have, they seem to be a bit hit and miss on the build quality

Really - that surprises me, seeing as they are BMW build.

I only ask, as the wife is thinking of getting one, and just wondered on peoples experiences.

To explain a bit more, 5 of my mates have or had one. 3 out of the 5 never had a single problem apart from the usual costs (servicing, brakes etc) the other 2 had no end of problems with theres, to be fair the Mini warantee covered most of it without cost, there is still the annoyance of loosing your car for the day etc.

The problem is, no matter how good certain cars are generally, sometimes you can just get a dud that causes you no end of grief.

I have owned a fair few of fords in my life (6), and my dad owned 5. And all of them have been very reliable - except one. One of the Focus' I owned was a money pit.

indeed, but at a rate of 2 out of 5 it is quite high. However in reality it is not a big enough sample group.

Ive worked with 3 people that have owned one. Dont really keep in touch with them anymore, but they never seemed to grumble much about them.

I suppose I had better do some real research instead of trying to rely upon forum people....

A mate clocked up 110k miles in his Cooper very quickly with no major problems.

Having driven his a bunch of times, personally, i think they are good to drive but the interior is a little cramped in the standard Mini's, especially considering that you can get Focuses and Golfs and so on for the same money (perhaps with better specs too).

Yeah, but lets be honest - the cooper S in a gun metal grey is a sexy beast - far sexier than a golf/focus.
