Would people who don't watch F1 know who most of the drivers are?
Sir Martin Whitmarsh?
He deserves it.
What for?
Damned if I know but he's famous. Those types eventually get one just for being alive. He'd deserve it as much as his drivers.

I'm not so sure, popularity is normally rewarded sure, but that's sort of the point of national awards isn't it? People who have contributed to the nation, really popular people would have done so.
I wouldn't say Whitmarsh though, is particularly famous or popular, would people who don't watch F1 know who he is?

this is a fact .... In my country people know only Shumacher and Ferrari.
No you're right its rubbish. It would just sink even lower if the likes of Whitmarsh got it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ron Dennis getting it. He is responsible for most of the success McLaren has had thus far, not to mention being the visionary of the MTC and McLaren road car operations.

Aside from their country's drivers and the odd legend (Schumi, Senna etc), i don't think so tbh...
The world doesn't care about anyone being knighted! Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire... It's a meaningless symbolic remnant of a title. Sir Elton John? Sir Richard Branson? Sir Wayne Newton?
No he wouldnt. He's done didly squat. And he's hardly famous. Known by F1 people but thats it. The drivers on the otherhand will be known by people not interested in F1 because they're on TV adverts and advertising hordings. So if you subscribe to the theory that its famous people who get knighted then the drivers clearly have it over Whitmarsh.
