Monaco?

I love the spectacle even though the race is usually a bit poor but I'm a bit sad that Canada & Monza are on BBC highlights, yet we get Monaco and Silverstone live?

Rubbish imo.

I dislike Monaco because it offers dull processional racing, not much opportunity for overtaking without ending in disaster, and only remains on the calendar because of it's prestige and heritage!

If there is two races I deliberately miss most years, it's Monaco and Valencia!

I can't miss Monaco...in fact I get most nervous at the start of a race in Monaco. Carnage can so easily happen at any second!!

Valencia on the other hand can rot in hell for all I care.

I love Monaco (going there this year :) ) and I think its rubbish that you can't overtake there. Probably the most popular spot would be out of the tunnel at the novelle chicane. But there are other places as Shumi showed last year with his pass of Lewis on the entry to Lowes.

In fact the overtakes at Monaco are better because they are really down to the driver and car. Aeros have almost no effect/importance at Monaco, so drivers can show and use their skills in passing. Look at Felipe's move in taking Nico last year. He was so close to the rear of the Merc coming out of nouvelle (something you can't normally do) then he got the power down superbly, got up the inside and nailed him at Tabac.

Monaco is also great because it is so different to any other track, short straights only and aeros have almost no effect there.

Especially when it's 2 racing pros going at each other, such close contact to the walls can only happen here.

100% agree

I 100% disagree.

To be honest I find it quite odd to see that line of reasoning used on a F1 forum filled with F1 enthusiasts. I understand it's your opinion, I just find it very very strange. To me - what has been identified by MOA is something I've often heard in the past from casual viewers - the sort that watch the odd race or will watch it with you if it's on but don't really understand the intricacies or details involved.

I think the statement is true of races such as Bahrain and to an extent Valencia where it's a procession but there are no other factors to hold your attention or think about, but related to Monaco - as already mentioned, the cars are so close to the barriers at speed, at times glancing them, the unmatched elements of the track such as the tunnel, the focus required by the drivers etc. Plus, as others have said, for any driver it can be one small mistake and race over - very little chance of recovery (with the odd exception such as Lewis in '08). Also, some of the most memorable races at Monaco that can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up haven't been because of overtaking but precisely because cars are haring round the course close together without overtaking just waiting for that one chance! Alonso and Hamilton in '07, Mansell and Senna in '92 etc.

In other words, even without much overtaking I could watch just one car going round Monaco for an hour if it's at the limit, it wouldn't get boring.

Personally I don't understand where F1 followers that say Monaco is boring are coming from - casual viewers, yes, but followers of the sport, no. Just my opinion of course.

Monaco is an odd one. As a circuit, on paper, it's the worst for overtaking, although to say it doesn't happen would be an erroneous statement. It does, and we've all seen it.

It doesn't always produce a great race, but sometimes it does, and the art of threading one's car through the tight, twisting streets of the principality really separates the men from the boys. The setting is also quite stunning, which is it's biggest attraction - the glamour, the city-scape, the buildings, the tunnel... visually it's brilliant.

What always gets me is folk that say they love Monaco, but hate circuits like Singapore. Singapore is a BETTER CIRCUIT than Monaco. Monaco has the history, and that does it a hell of a lot of favours.

Furthermore, why miss the race? I look forward to every race on the calendar, even ones at Barcelona or Valencia! It's all about the passion! :whip::wink:

Agree LewEngBridewell, I watch every race and look forward to them all, even China, Barcelona & Valencia.

This year though, because I don't have Sky, I'm a bit dissapointed that the BBC are showing Spain, Monaco, Vallencia & Silverstone live, but we're only getting delayed highlights of Australia, Canada, Italy & Japan.

I enjoy all the races, but the BBC have picked some live choices that I find strange, unless they had no choice and Sky told them what they were getting live.

I can understand why Australia and Japan aren't being shown live, and that is because they're on in the very early hours of the morning. Not everybody used to get up and watch those races live anyway! So, in a schedule which is forced to select which races are shown live, it makes sense to focus in on the races which will pull in the most viewers when shown LIVE.

It's gutting that Monza and Montreal aren't being shown live, but I guess the distribution of live races has to be evened out over the season.

In the east coast USA all we get are races where you get up in the morning to watch them live or you get up really really early in the morning to watch them live.

As far as Monaco is concerned, it's like saying you hate the Oscars, they're still going to televise it and it' still going to get a huge global audience year after year.

As far as overtaking, a pass in Monaco is worth 10 DRS zone passes elsewhere.

I'd say 11.5 DRS zone passes... :hehe:

I am certainly no casual viewer, my comments come from almost 20 years of watching cars going around, playing follow the leader, as proved by Lewis Hamilton last year, making an overtake in Monaco often ends in disaster for one or both drivers. Monaco and Valencia are the two races that I am least bothered about missing, as they both start at 7am in Midwest USA. Over the years, much better venues have been axed, this very year Turkey, which I consider to be better has gone, while Monaco remains 'the jewel in the crown' of F1.
