F1Live:
A Formula One race was the second most watched sporting event in the world last year, independent television viewing analysts Initiative Sports Futures has found.

A new report shows that the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, a three-way showdown for the title that saw Kimi Raikkonen crowned world champion, was beaten only by American football's NFL Super Bowl as the most popular sports telecast of 2007.

The Interlagos race attracted an average global TV audience of 78 million, the report found, compared with 97m for the Super Bowl.

Initiative also found that the total 'reach' of the 2007 championship finale - the amount of people who watched at least three minutes of the telecast - was 152m.

The Super Bowl's 'reach' was lower, at 142m.

Good point Bud, I just heard a comentator describe Daytona as the world centre for motor sport!!!
So what sport was most watched ?- football I suppose (not American football) anyone know?

If so many people watch F1 the Bernis and MM should pay even more attention to us all.

(SLIGHTLY OFF THE SUBJECT) I'm an American, been interested in F1 since 1959.
Even back then I was stunned by the commitment required of the drivers ( in those days drivers were killed with an unfortunate regularity), the beauty of the cars, and the exotic nature of the race courses. I was also astounded by the lack of interest shown by the sporting public in my country, assuming that the situation would all change when we developed our own drivers, cars and eventually champions. That, of course, hasn't happened, and I'm still amiss to explain it really (though I've been known to rant and rave about a certain....lack of sophistication?)

In any case, why the rest of the world would have any interest in the Super Bowl is beyond me (I guess there is a case for simple...spectacle), and I'm a football fan....your's and mine.

Hi Bud, can you please clarify your point? - 'the Euro Vs US we do it better mentality' [/color]- is US 'us' as in Aussies ? or US as in United States?. If 'us' is as 'Euros' are you saying that we Europeans do better than the Americans?. Where do the Aussies come into this? I think that, in the past, you have criticised F1 for being too European.

I know it is off topic but I remember watching a program on TV I think it was just after 9/11 and how safe Aircraft are, when the Air Hostess said over the tannoy as the aircraft landed "Welcome to Washington DC the capital of the world" I can not remember being told that when I was a school

European Vs U.S. not us ;)

And its the same mentality on both sides but i see the Americans in particular will only follow their own sports ie NBA, NFL, MLB, IRL, NASCAR only recently Soccer has taken off with some following.
F1 is seen by the yanks as someone elses game so to speak so spectator interest isnt that large.

and i have critisised FIA for being European, i think Americans run the most fair and even sporting classes in the world. albeit highly packaged
