From autosport.com:

Dennis keeps low profile at McLaren launch

By Alan Baldwin Monday, January 7th 2008, 17:47 GMT

McLaren boss Ron Dennis denied distancing himself from the Formula One team after keeping a low profile at the launch of their new car on Monday.

"We are formulating the future in lots of ways and there is absolutely no decision on anything that relates to anybody's position in the company," he told reporters.

"We are very focused on the future, know what we're doing and where we are going and (it is as) simple as that. There is no real change in any shape or form."

McLaren unveiled their 2008 challenger for the first time in Stuttgart, home of engine partners Mercedes, in a move that some suggested could signal a shift in the balance of power within the team.

Mercedes own 40 percent of McLaren, with Bahrain's Mumtalakat Holding company owning 30 percent and Dennis and business partner Mansour Ojjeh holding 15 percent each.

There has long been speculation that Mercedes could take a majority stake in the team who last won the championship with Finland's Mika Hakkinen in 1999.

McLaren had a nightmare year in 2007, being fined $100 million and stripped of all their constructors' points after a spying controversy involving leaked Ferrari technical information.

Dennis, 60, said last year that he had been considering stepping back from the day-to-day running of the team, with chief executive Martin Whitmarsh assuming more of his responsibilities.

That was complicated however by the spy saga, with the governing body drawing a line under the affair only last month.

Whitmarsh and Mercedes motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug were the ones answering media questions on Monday while Dennis limited himself to a brief introductory appearance on stage.

Asked afterwards about the team's rocky year, Dennis made clear he had moved on.

"I'm just thinking about the future," he said. "I am very focused on the future.

"We wanted to put ourselves in the position of looking forward and concentrating on what we do best, which is to win races."

"My enthusiasm is as strong as you would expect it to be having done it (Formula One) for the best part of 40 years," added the Briton. "I am a racer at heart."

I hope he stays around for another few years. He's a good team-manager imo.

I think Ron Dennis will be around for another few years yet. He will certainly want to win at least another title before considering stepping down. Ron Dennis virtually is McLaren. It will be the end of an era for the team and Formula One when he definitely does go. I would like to see him given an honorary role at McLaren when he retires.

Win another title then go?! how long is that going to take? I can't see anyone but Ferrari winning both titles next year and the year after that. I think this should be Ron's last season he has done a good job, a great job but a new man at the top would mean new ideas. Martin Whitmarsh has been waiting so long to get the top job and keeping Ron Dennis around for sentimental reasons isn't going to help anyone. Least of all Mclaren

With the current FIA in situ thats probably correct. But what sweet victory if McLaren win despite them

Martin Whitmarsh's career has been bubbling along nicely for quite some time. I believe Ron Dennis still has what it takes to run McLaren. What happened in 2007 could have happened to anybody in any team.

Until you reveal whatever hidden agenda you have with McLaren and Ron Dennis, nobody can even begin to listen to you on points pertaining to the man and his organisation.

Alan Henry in Stuttgart
Tuesday January 8, 2008
The Guardian

Mercedes-Benz is on the verge of buying a majority shareholding in the McLaren group, a move which could spell the end of Ron Dennis's control of the British formula one team.

The potential buyout seemed a step closer yesterday with the unveiling of the McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 car for the forthcoming season in the German manufacturer's ultramodern museum complex in Stuttgart. It was the first time in their 13-year partnership that McLaren had unveiled their new formula one car on Mercedes' home turf and, although the unexpected presence of Bernie Ecclestone, the formula one commercial rights holder, may have signalled formal absolution for the British team after their involvement in the last season's espionage scandal, the fact that Dennis took very much a back seat at the formal press conference fuelled speculation that the 60-year-old McLaren chairman might be considering a dignified retreat into semi-retirement.

So ,, is Ron Bacardi over?

That's true but only Ron Dennis could have handled it the Ron Dennis way. Which we now know is the wrong way. He alienated Alonso and declared his support for Lewis publicly then after the season was over he tried to bring charges to Renault. I think Whitmarsh stepped in and said to him to back down because you are damaging the team. No matter how good a job he has have done his time has come to step back and enjoy his retirement.

Ron Alienated Alonso??? obvious he Alienated himself and was ultimately over him not getting preferential treatment not that Lewis was! and when did Ron declare his support publicly for Lewis? If youre talking about China with the "we" comment well with one race to go do you not think that All of McLarenMercedes would have known Alonso was aGONEso come season end?!

8Ball get the facts McLaren not RON took the Renault charge to the FIA during their final hearing not after the season! It was done in an attempt to test the FIA to say well if we get done youre gonna have to look at all cases with the same vigour! I doubt McLaren would have brought it up if not for their own sanctions.
