ESPNF1:
Former world champion and current driver steward Nigel Mansell says that Lewis Hamilton needs to 'settle down' and 'act appropriately' in the wake of a number of recent outbursts.
Hamilton's on-track woes have been compounded by a number of run-ins with FIA stewards for his overly-aggressive driving - particularly regarding his collisions with Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado in Monaco.
His latest outburst came at the British Grand Prix when he slated his team for a tyre decision that left him qualifying tenth on the grid and again after the race when ordered to conserve fuel at the expense of a podium finish.
"Lewis is not mature and he's not got a head on him," Mansell told F1 Racing magazine. "I think he needs to settle himself down because the recent episode at Monaco was unnecessary and unflattering both for himself and Formula One. I thought his driving style was very poor because he had no respect for anyone else because where is anyone going to go?
"To say that overtaking is impossible at Monaco, well... I've done it coming out of the tunnel several times... but then to say what he said about the stewards was appalling. I was very disappointed and he's got to remember that he has been a world champion so he should act accordingly and appropriately at all times."
Mansell added that Hamilton ought to take a leaf out of fellow team-mate Jenson Button's book about the right way to behave as a former world champion.
"Both Lewis and Jenson were both great world champions at the time and it's absolutely fantastic to have them both in the same team but Jenson, for me, carries with him just that little bit more maturity."
Ouch! Another one. Sooner or later it'll sink in - or not
I think this is an opinion piece and of course the media turns in into something hyperbolic. To compare F1 cars of 20 years ago to today's machines is ridiculous in the overtaking comment.
Didn't Mansell crash out during the first five minutes of Le Mans last year? I guess maturity takes a long time.
Perhaps the extra little bit of maturity Jenson carries with him is what consistently keeps him a few tenths behind his team mate in qualifying. WTF? do we want to clone F1 drivers the way the cars have been cloned? I for one like having at least a variety of drivers if I'm being denied a variety of everything else in the sport.
I don't know. If an employee of mine told me he wasn't changing a thing after repeated penalties and mistakes that cost my company a ton of money....I would sit him down and ask him what had been said to him to make him believe that at such a young age he was already perfect and in need of no improvement. Everyone has areas they could improve on...Hamilton's are obvious. He simply says he doesn't give a toss and will not change anything. That seems childish and immature to me. Oh...and Mansel. And... And... And...
He is a great driver....when he doesn't screw up...which unfortunately for his team is more often than not this year.
Your insistence that he's lost his employer a ton of money is your chosen perception conveniently disregarding what he does bring to them in earnings, yet It's neither here, nor there. If McLaren were that upset by his driving style, let them get rid of him after his contract expires next year.
In this regard, your statements are very similar to Lewis' "outbursts" saying that you know better than McLaren. Funny isn't it?
All of the claims you make to the contrary, he's a cash cow for McLaren, the advertisers feel they're getting their money's worth, and he's got the largest fan base world wide of any driver. If it was anything other than that, he'd be out of a drivers seat. Certainly he can improve, but to rationalize your disdain for the guy, you've got to say something and going back to the comments post race, there wasn't anything there that you could fault any driver for, but for Lewis Hamilton they're an "outburst". The article talks about Maldonado and Massa, yet he wasn't penalized for Maldonado... see, that's what bias in journalism does.
So going back to your company analogy, if he's making you thrice the ton of money he's costing you, I'd bet you'd keep him on the payroll too.
We all need advice from those more experienced than us at times. Anyone who says that they don't is a arrogant prat. Truth.
No one is forcing you to like the guy... you go support whomever you like, but why the need to go on forums and repeatedly voice your dislike of someone time and time again? This last comment isn't limited to just Lewis BTW.
