I trhink you've hit the button there. They want a show. They dont want racing.

The enjoyment I'm getting from this season is wondering which records will Vettel break? I'd like to see him break a few of Schumacher's records, like most wins in a season, highest percentage of wins, most pole positions, and finishing every single race on the podium. Call me boring or a Vettel fan-boy - but that is the reason why I don't think the season is boring. I want to see records start tumbling down.

x2

If any other driver jumped in a RB-7, they would perform like Webber

I still enjoy the mid field battles, uber-technology, and the excitement / drama of the weekend

But witness Valencia, where yes, Vettel did run off with it ... again. But back in the pack, we witnessed bunches of cars battling for position, and making pass attempts, and passes on each other. That's something that didn't exist in 2000 - 2005

Well I wouldn`t really agree on that. There was overtaking, no questions about that one. Somehow it is the 2010 season that springs to my mind lacking overtaking in dry races, well very little position changes that year in dry anyway, well with refuelling atleast there were different fuel strategies, some some were flying and passing while others full tank and rolling home.

However this year, what we see is artificial racing. Now once you`re in that zone, you dont need that much risking. Quite a lot of overtaking is done even before the braking zone, doesnt seem a lot of fun there to me; in Turkey it appeared DRS was way too easy; in Australia on the other hand the zone was not enough; so obviously there has to be found an optimal range. Ok, the records of passing might get broken every next race, but on the other hand, who cares, if they are all just press a button when the green light goes on.
For me, the DRS system sort of makes me think of NASCAR, I`m just wonderign why? :hehe:

I dont know why, but lately it just seems like most of them are driving so carefully not to risk too much and for god`s sake touch wheel to wheel, because they`re scared of those "bad and strict" stewards. Well I would say too often we see some penalties, I was actualyl surprised they didnt give a ridiculous penalty to either Hamilton or Button in Canada, just to make sure nobody tries another move like that :hehe:

To sum all that load of pointless cr@* I just wrote, I wouldn`t call whats happening too boring, but the racing for me, has taken a step backwards.
Now for a full set of rules, we need 1) shortcuts; 2) sprinkles; 3) medal system. That would do well with DRS aswell and that could be a great show, not to be confused with racing.
But to be honest, thats how I lately look at F1. For me ,doesnt realyl matter who takes the titles anyway, since Timo wont do it this year, again :( and Pedro not racing anymore
So lets hope for a good race in Silverstone, or should I say, show?

I agree with this, and it is similar to WWE (which is soooo fake) versus UFC.

Jaques Villeneuve was in the news recently saying something similar. He's over this season because DRS basically guarantees overtaking, instead of allowing the defending driver to to... well, defend. So the defending drivers, like Schumacher in Canada are forced to give up and let the overtake happen. Not even try.

This basically answers what RC asked me:

You want to watch records accumulated rather than good, exciting motor racing? I find that unbelievable!

Because it's not exciting motor racing for me. For me I enjoy defensive driving more than attacking aggressive driving. I think it requires a lot of skill to keep other cars behind you. For example - Vettel being able to hold off faster cars in both Catalunya and Monaco was just incredible, and the most enjoyable racing I have seen in some time (and yes - thanks to all who are dying to point out what I already know happened at the end of Monaco). That's exciting motor racing, not via some sort of artificial magic flap.

Yeah maybe but still not enjoyable.Compared to last years this domination thing is so boooring. Not because i dont support Red Bull, its just about the domination.Like some other people i dont even bother watching the race at its time when im not so available.-I dont even watch them on the internet afterwards- Last year that was what i would do.In motor sports some fans -maybe majority- want surprises and of course excitement not domination and easy overtakes at back-thanks to new systems-

Despite my thoughts,i surprisingly enjoyed the last half of the race. The pit stop stuffs except Di Resta's and Jenson's,and Webbers trying to overtake for example. Most enjoyable race i have seen so far in this season.-couldnt see Canadian GP after the rain break-

I thought all of it was great (Jenson's pitstop aside). The race I haven't enjoyed watching this year has been Valencia. The rest have been great. Not a fan of Vettel dominating, but the racing has more than made up for that.

Once upon a time grand prix cars didn't use aerodynamics, where such things as wings and ground effects just weren't there. But in the mid 60's wings and their attendant evils became relevant, and changed the game.

And ever since, the rule makers have attempted to deal with aero influence, it's drawbacks and consequences. In a way, wings made it artificial, and these new tricks are an attempt by artificial means to overcome an artificial obstacle. But what the heck, Formula One has become a circus, and more entertainment than pure motor racing.

In 2011 we have seen some interesting attempts to negate the aero drawbacks via the DRS. It's a wonderful concept, but to deliver on it's promise, requires careful tweaking at each track. My concept is that when DRS is employed, the attacking car is able to pull up into a position where they have a reasonable and fighting chance to make a pass. Let them arrive at the braking point side-by-side, and let the best man win. But sadly, we're seen where cars can't get up, or even worse, where they just blow past the defending car.

That just isn't right, it sucks. The car being attacked should have a decent chance of defending, just as the attacker should have a decent chance of fighting for a pass. Like I said, it requires a lot of attention and tweaking to live up to it's promise.

Now, who missed Silverstone? Who didn't watch in breathless anticipation at the battle that loomed between Hamilton and Massa, and Vettel and Webber? Wow, the 2nd and 3rd place cars in a battle, and the 4th and 5th doing the same. Or who didn't just feel their jaws drop in complete amazement as Button and Massa fought it out, hard, but clean?

Admittedly, DRS still has a ways to go before it delivers, but until then it still looks pretty darn good with all those great battles, passes, and such.

P.S. If you didn't even bother to watch the race live, then it never generated excitement in your heart in the first place.

I wasn't watching then, but can anyone fill me in if Alonzo was as dominate when he won his titles?

No. In 2005, he fought hard with Kimi Raikkonen. The latter would probably have won, but the McLaren was too unreliable that year. Even though it was generally the faster car.

In 2006, it was a season-long battle with Michael Schumacher, who "retired" at the end of the year.

Both titles were resolved at Interlagos.
