I think it's all posturing by all sides; why would Renault walk away should the L4 not transpire; they still have the V8 engine they use currently. Ferrari huff and puff on a constant basis and threaten to leave F1 but haven't left yet! Mercedes are probably developing a L4 turbo but is keeping it hush, hush, If Ferrari are not developing a L4 turbo then they would be stupid; it's not like money is any object for Ferrari. What needs to happen is that the FIA need to grow a pair and stick to their guns instead of oo'ing and ah'ing about it!

Road cars, thats why most of them are in it. F1 provides excellent marketing for road cars.

I'm not sure how separate Scuderia Ferrari is from the rest of Ferrari though, or Ferrari from the rest of fiat. I'm guessing the former not very much, and the latter considerably.

Scuderia Ferrari is how Ferrari advertises their cars. It's cheaper than television ads and they get a global audience they'd never be able to reach with an ad agency.

Yes, and more importantly prestige, which is their main reason for not wanting the new engines whereas Renault do. It'll benefit Renault to be able to show a car that still packs a punch despite traditionally moderate numbers, Ferrari customers don't want that. They want to look big and cool.

aka small pecker syndrome :hehe:

Ok maybe a Ferrari road car won't run an inline 4 but surely advancements in turbo and ERS would be applicable to whatever engines they chuck in. I don't see Renault Clio's running around with V12, V10s or V8 but Renault made those

Rinnow have never campaigned a 12-cylinder engine in F1. AFAIK, the only V-12s they ever have built were for aeroplanes and diesel locomotives. As for the 10-cylinder, they campaigned V10s before they were mandated by the TRs. In fact, they built their first F1 V10s as an engine supplier only, not as a team, in a season when V8s, 10s and 12s all lined up together on the start grid. So the V10 design purely was their choice, not acquiescence for the greater good of the sport.

Everyone's reasons for racing F1 are self-serving. No one spends this much money, time, intellect and effort at anything without the reasonable prospect of a return on their investment (except maybe Lord Hesketh  ). Teams always have come and gone from the sport as they pleased. If it should evolve into a format that no longer meets their business objectives, they are free to leave by the same door they entered through.

To me it just looks like Renault are throwing their toys out of the pram as they are developing a turbo engine and want a head start on their rivals.

I don't understand how Renault can get a head start? if the other engine makers are not developing an L4 Turbo now in advance of the engine regs change, then more fool them!!!

Dateline today, Autosprint is reporting it a fait accompli that the 2013 engine formula will be postponed.

Good news :)

Personally I was looking forward to the challenges that a new engine formula would present and also bring back the lottery of engine failures...

But what it does do is make the FIA look like a bunch of muppets; FIA announce new engine regs, Ferrari say they don't like it and suddenly it's postponed. The FIA has become a joke since Jean Todt took over, I may not have agreed with everything that Max Mosley did but at least he stuck to his guns and didn't give in so readily, at this point, control might as well be handed to FOTA!

Remember that 40million pound budget cap?

Though, I agree with the sentiment. The FIA are seeming to have to do a lot of backing down, Todt might be trying to be too anti-authoritarian, he didn't seem to mind standing his ground and upsetting some when at Ferrari.

Is the budget cap actually happening? I understood that it had been canned permanently!

The FIA are a bunch of muppets. Mosley was corrupt and power crazed. Todt is ....well not sure what he is but I wish the other guy had won.
