Hell it could be "United SPEED of America" it'll still be cooler than "The Circuit of the Americas"....

Oh dear, well you cant blame them, we may say otherwise but there are far more important things then a racetrack, especially a grand prix track in texas of all places,

25 million dollars covers 500 teacher salaries!!!

Get me a teaching job in the U.S of A please!

It's actually not that great: 50k per nose, but that includes fringe benefits such as pension plan, health insurance, etc. Thus, net pay after taxes is more like 30-35k and that's $$ not pounds, so it's worth sh!t these days.

The teachers here I know start out in the low to mid 30's and can go as high as mid 60's if they go out an get masters and after a long career. So not a great living as DD points out. A worthy profession and certainly underpaid as far as I'm concerned, but not a career one goes into for the money.

Certainly couldn't afford do go jetting off to various GPs around the world with that salary! Maaaaybe they could afford to go to the Circuit of the Americas GP in 2012.

...how's that for getting the thread back on topic?

Yeah i realised that 25 mil split into 500 is a pretty normal salary......sounds a lot though

and assumig 50,000 is 30,000 over here, 30,000 is still a great salary.

Wait....huh? the 50k includes fringe benefits, but your also taxed on it to make it more 30 k.........confused......

Except that all the teachers are in unions, so even the bad ones stay employed. And the worst thing is that if you are a good one you dont even get bonuses or additional rewards so you have no incentive to be a good teacher. In conclusion, become a teacher, be bad at it and live well.

That is pretty poo, The USD and AUD are about 1-1 these days so I cant imagine teachers here getting that, some friends who are teachers i think get around 47k after tax.

This is not an accurate statement to say the least.

Yup, overhead is huge: pension plan contributions paid by the employer, e.g., need to be factored into the 50k, subsidizing health insurance by employer as well - brings it down to 35k gross income. But state and federal taxes get taken out from this, so net pay will be in the low 30k's.
At today's exchange rates, $30'000 = £18'450. Still want it? :P

It's not right to compare straight like that. There are differences in the purchasing power of the currencies and the US dollar still has proportionally more purchasing power than most other currencies, i.e., you get a lot for your money here in the US (just look at the gas prices compared to Europe or Australia!). So, the 'value' of 30k net when living costs are factored in, may well be higher or the same as your example teacher's in Australia.
