Who the was advising ex-racing driver?

I don't think it's even worth appealing just for 2 points, not with the current scoring system.

They aren't really able to appeal a time penalty, anyway.

The stewards have been pretty bad all-round so far; why did Buemi get a stop-and-go instead of a drive-through?

I thought the same here. When I seen Buemi get a stop and go I was thinking "wait what!? Speeding in the pit lane is always a drive through"

Plus the Alonso Hamilton incident was a racing incident. Hamilton was weaving incredibly excessively this race last year and I got away with a warning. I didn't notice him doing anything wrong this weekend, and he got a drive through.

Very poor stewarding all round this weekend.

Vettel continues to have some of the fastest pit stops in F1, certainly faster than the other frontrunners ...and his teammate. At least two of his stops in Malaysia were under four seconds.

Sounds a minor point but one of the keys to Chris Horner & RBR's competitiveness is effectively managing the small losses, including those that might come during pit stops. How else to be so successful when they are down on horsepower to everyone with Macca or Ferrari engines?

Something was amiss on his left front and Hamilton's stop on Lap 38 was more than seven seconds. And fair scuttled his result.

Ferrari definitely need work. I didn't see them enough at Malaysia to get good timings on them but at Melbourne their pit stops routinely were over five seconds. They are looking more competitive during the race than in qualies but this pit stop discrepancy does not bode well for their race result. Two pit stops/two seconds at a 120-mph race average puts Ferrari more than 100 meters behind from the green flag.

Hamilton's weaving last year was not a blocking manoeuver, he was trying to break Petrov's draught. Not at all the same thing.

I didn't see Hamilton move twice - I'm not saying he didn't do it, I just didn't see it...If he did, yes that warrants a penalty, but that being the case...Why has Massa not been penalised for moving around to defend on the straights? Button audibly complained about it in Australia - right as I had been about to point out that Massa was doing it in the Chat.

Massa was also making - admittedly half-hearted - second moves on the pit straight to defend today. And I did point it out in the chat. I can't quite remember who he was defending against...I suspect it was Webber, who eventually did make it around the outside in Turn 1 (In a move I have insisted several times was a work of art)

If it was okay when Massa was doing it, why is it not okay when Lewis does it?

As for Alonso's penalty, I assign 100% of the blame for the incident to him, and it was a thoroughly stupid, avoidable mistake on his part. He clearly caused an avoidable accident as defined by the rules.

That being said...It warranted at most a €1,000 fine or something. I was expecting a formal Warning myself. Reason being, he did technically come off worse and he had to pit as a result anyway.

Can someone explain to me why Vettel (again!) isn't penalised for doing exactly the same thing as someone else does and gets penalised for???????

How many times does he change direction at the start?

I don't believe the rule applies at the start

Another highly watchable race this morning! Just a few of my thoughts-

Mega starts for Renault again, they seem to have some really good fundamental traction built into the car which bodes well for them at certain tracks. Especially great for Heidfeld to bounce back like this. They are easily on for 4th in the WCC and may yet challenge for 3rd in my view. Thought Brundle's invented on the spot nickname for Petrov was quite amusing.

Red Bull are very beatable on race pace. I thought Vettel was going to utterly walk this season but there are a lot of things suggesting it won't be quite that easy. Shame Hamilton ruined his final set of softs in qualifying, that basically wrecked hs race, and somewhat needlessly too. He definitely has the raw pace of Vettel i think. Button isn't far off either, he seems very strong on those harder tyres. I'm still not entirely sure how he suddenly jumped Hamilton midway through the race though, he seemed quite a way back! Webber was screwed by having no KERS but i think today showed that he isn't done yet. Great comeback drive in a car that had a huge straight line disadvantage - he just did his overtaking in unorthodox places instead, it was great to watch. I think he showed that there really wasn't much in it between 3 and 4 stopping today... Ferrari had massively improved race pace as i thought they might. Massa seemed a lot quicker too.

In the midfield, top 10 finishes for Kobayashi and PDR once again! I think i might have underestimated just how much talent Di Resta has... it was pretty frantic in that area of the field today. No idea why Rosberg had such a crap race. It is a shame to see Williams have such a bad weekend but i'm sure the car is better than this. They were very quick at times in Melbourne.

Regarding the penalties... hm. As someone has said a pretty dangerous precident has been set. An 'avoidable incident' is a pretty vague term anyway.... and Hamilton, i never even noticed his error because i was far too busy, you know, being completely entertained by a great battle between two of the absolute best men on the track! Shame these decisions take something away from that.

Harsh penalty....
a warning would have sufficed if they did commit those mistakes(I don't think they did)...

Luckily for hamilton and alonso, the penalties didn't have any major effect on the standings(alonso actually stayed on 6th place)

For those of you in the UK the incident that Hamilton was penalised for can be seen on iPlayer at time code 2:20:50 here:

Well according to Andrew Benson that was the incident he's being penalised for, but it's so incredibly harsh i'm wondering if he's wrong and it actually wasn't broadcasted at all, the following lap on that same straight the camera is on Alonso's rear wing and we can't see what Hamilton is doing just ahead.

Hamilton appears to accept the penalty, but that might just be him not giving a damn anymore because its a bad result either way.

All I see is him moving to the line, then off it to block, then back on to it when the corner arrived without Alonso having made a move...If they're defining the return to the racing line as a move just like the move off of it, then Massa's broken the rule at least twice.

I totally agree. I would like to know for certain if thats what the penalty is for, or if the actual incident wasn't shown. Hopefully the BBC will be able to clear it up in their coverage next week.

I know there's not many points involved here, but it could be setting a really bad precedent and ruin what could be an exciting season of mid race battles.

from espnf1 app:

"I knew I was going to get a penalty, I'm not surprised," Hamilton was quoted by Autosport. "I was in with the stewards, so I anticipated it. I always try to assume the worst-case scenario. It's only one spot, and it's not really made me feel any worse than how the weekend has gone anyway."
